l. I have never had a dog this attached so immediately. He just wants to please me. He is so happy to have been saved and that is the priceless thing you get from a rescue dog - their devotion. He knows it. He is very attentive to me. Def more girl person than man. Some other Bentley-isms are: - Loves when you talk to him and has the happiest tail - Not the biggest fan of treats (strange- lol) but when he does like something he takes it oh so gently. So since he is not treat-motivated…have to find other ways to teach and train. - He is not a jumper. He will offer his paw to you. - Does not have a reaction at the door and does not try to dart out. - Has had a few accidents in the house - leg hiking and all. Hesitant to go out on his own…but with coaxing with other dogs, he follows. - Loves the dog beds and couch, but will not jump on bed unless asked. His favorite sleeping position is on his back and he absolutely lives for belly rubs. - Very curious and cautious with new things - so you have to take it slow with him - fast movements scare him. - Not much leash work yet due to his paws healing but will let you put on the collar. - Will get into the car and is good on car rides. He really likes the comfy spot in the back. - So good about taking his meds and doing his laser and water therapy. Does well in the vet office and with other strange dogs. - So good with our other dogs - 2 chihuahuas and a Great Dane. No food aggression seen either with me or other dogs. Him and our Dane have separate bowls in different areas but have consistently shared their bowls. Sometimes one drinks water while the other one eats. - Met a few new people…both male and female in the house and did great with them. - No reaction to other dogs barking at all. He looks more annoyed with them ha!! He has not let out a bark yet. - When I get home from being out of the house he is the most excited boy - zoomies are full speed - so that may be the only thing to watch with small kids and dogs. Our pups are used to it and know to get out of the way. - He does know commands to sit, off, and stay. Will sit and wait to be released when getting his food too. - When he doesn’t want to do something he won’t. He is very strong. He is aware when you correct him - not like some dogs who are oblivious - so he does want to “do better” however that may be. - Sleeps in the bedroom with us…and does well through the night. -Not a fan of the kennel and has been left out with the other dogs when both of us have been gone. No destruction. Just jumping off the couch when we got home. Bentley is ahhhhhmazing!!! ========================= To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! form.jotform/51994996709176 .For more information, please email us at rescuemesrgdrr. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
