e home for about a week, and I am slowly starting to trust the people with me. I really like the 4-year-old they have. She says we are friend. I am house trained, and go potty outside. I will make a lot of noise if you don’t pay attention to me immediately. I won’t make a mess in the house. My foster family has a stay at home mom, who is with me all the time, so I get to roam the house. I have been left all day, but I was in the kennel for that. It made me anxious. When the family got home, I was a little agitated. I am protective of my kennel, and other animals should not be allowed in it. The door has been kept closed during the day, and while it’s annoying, because that’s my space, I tolerate it because no one else can get in, and I don’t chase after the little dog and bark at her. I do sleep in the kennel at night. Some nights are better than others. If I am really lonely, I will whine and howl, but I eventually calm down and sleep all night in the kennel. I am good with mid-sized dogs, as long as they are not in my kennel or around my food. I have been around a cat at the vet, and didn’t think much of it. I have not been around small dogs, so I am not sure what to think of them. I really like the small human that my foster family has, she is 4, we are the same age. She plays tea party with me, and we howl like warewolves together. Her mom is not impressed, but we have fun. We like to lay on the floor and watch TV together too. I am fine with men, when I am properly introduced. I am very nervous when there are new people and I bark a lot, but I haven’t shown any aggression towards the new people I’ve met in the past week. I think they all should pay attention to me, and love me. I have good manners, if I do say so myself. I don’t take food off of the counters, but I do like to know what is going on up there and try to watch. I don’t take food from little people either. I don’t rummage in an open trash can, unless I think it’s time to be fed, and you ignored my noise. I haven’t chewed any shoes or furniture or rugs, but I would really like my own stuffed toy. I will take those from the humans. They are nice to snuggle and eat the arms off of. I do have a bad habit of being a tad bit stubborn and drinking out of the toilet. I know basic commands like sit, and lie down. I don’t like to stay, but I can, if I want to. I also can give you my right paw or left paw when you ask. I do not jump on people that are smaller than me. My foster daddy is 6’4” so he is big like me and can have big hugs from me. I do not like to be alone. I sit at the foster mom’s feet when she works, and put my butt on the couch when the teen is home and is playing games and would really, really like to sleep in that big bed. I really like to be with the family and get all the loves. For more information, please email us at srgdrr.incgmail. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
