Great Dane-Unknown Mix Dogs For Adoption in Von Ormy, TX, USA

Posted Breed: Great Dane / Mixed (short coat). THANK YOU for wanting a RESCUED DOG/PUP!!!! THEIR LIVES DEPEND ON IT!!! www.yourtxrescueconnection.org Daisy came to us from a neighbor who

rescued her from the streets after almost hitting her while driving home. After the near miss, she pulled over and as she opened her driver door, Daisy jumped into her truck. The neighbor could see that Daisy had just had a litter and that she was extremely thin and frail. Daisy was taken to the vet the very next day and it was determined that Daisy was free of heartworms but needed to get back to a healthy weight. It has taken lots of small, well spaced meals, but she is now doing two regular feedings a day, and thriving. The vets tell us that Daisy is a Fawnequin Great Dane, somewhere between 1 ½ and 3 years old. Given that, she is probably full grown and stands about 31 inches at the shoulder. (It was hard to measure her because she thought I wanted to wrestle when I was trying to get her height!) As for her weight, she is about 70 lbs. Daisy is an energetic love bug that doesn’t realize she is a dog. She is house broken, crate trained, extremely, extremely (and I cannot emphasize enough) extremely lovable. She loves to sit on the couch just like everyone else in the family, rear end planted on the couch cushions, front legs on the floor. When you are scratching her neck she will bury her head between your legs and wiggle. If you have a treat in your hand she will sit. If you scold her verbally, she will talk back to you, (it is very cute.) She will go into her crate on command (“Lay down Daisy”) and with the Starmark training collar, she is very pleasant to take on a walk. Without the collar, you are in for the ride of your life!! Daisy is high energy, runs and leaps like a gazelle, yet can slow down quickly and snuggle. Daisy has a veracious appetite, perhaps from fighting for survival out on the streets. Whatever the reason, we keep her separated from our other fur baby when it comes time to eat or else she would have second dinners!! She's not aggressive but she would take their food. Daisy is good with other dogs and kids. So far non reactive to cats but has only encountered them at the vets office. If this sounds like the love of your life, please email Adoptions@Godsdogsrescue.org and let's talk!!! GOD'S DOGS Rescue, in San Antonio TX, does not have a shelter - ALL of our dogs are raised in foster homes in the San Antonio area. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
