e considered. He was driven to a family who sincerely wanted him and were ready to adopt him - however he would not stop trying to lunge at them.... so potential adopters need to know that he is a true challenge and will definitely require extreme work. Tikaani is a very special boy - he came to us at GPRM but went straight to the wonderful fosters who have worked with him from day one. He has made remarkable progress - but he still has more to learn and will only be adopted to a very Pyr savvy adopter willing to put in the time and effort. This is what the foster mom says: Tikaani (Kaani) is an almost 4-year-old "pocket pyr" at only 80 pounds, but he makes up for his lack of size with his extra-large personality. He is very in tune with his people, extremely intelligent, and needs to be challenged. Tikaani had a very rough start to life, and will require and deserves an extra special home. He came in to rescue at only 8 months old, and we were given little to no information about what to expect. We immediately found out he is extremely nervous around new people, and it takes a lot of time and patience to earn his trust. He bonds hard to the people he trusts, and like a typical pyr, he can be very protective. He does not like new people in the home, but he does warm up after frequent, repeat visits—and very slow introductions. He has the most expressive, captivating eyes, and if you pay attention, you can always tell what he needs. His front right leg is shorter than the others due to previous mistreatment. He has been through testing and therapy and it doesn't seem to cause him any pain, but it is a constant, visual reminder of why he fears humans. He loves car rides, walks, puzzle toys, and spending time with his humans. Kaani is a goofy, playful, silly boy who never fails to make me laugh. He likes to "jaw snap" (make a barking motion without any noise) when he's excited or just wants to talk back—we often have conversations back and forth. While he's not much of a snuggler, he always likes to be close and makes me feel so incredibly loved. I've spent time with a lot of dogs over the years, and none have given me the sweet, devoted feeling he does. Tikaani requires an experienced pyr owner with a lot of patience, love, and understanding. His ideal home would be a quiet home with no children, few visitors, and with adults who can meet him where he is and work at his pace. He's the pyrfect dog for any introvert! He would do best with a female dog around the same age, and he is great with cats/kittens.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
