ss than 8 hours!! Meet Jack! He is truly a gentle giant. He was born around 10/10/2016, and will likely be a huge 100 pounds when he reaches full adulthood in another year! His coat will probably get thicker and more plush as he becomes more healthy. This poor boy ended up at the shelter after being found as a stray. He had multiple facial wounds that looked like he’d been attacked by another dog, and it was clear he had never lived inside a home. He was nervous and unsure when first arriving to his foster home, but after some good meals, walks, love, and attention, Jack began loving indoor life! His facial fur is coming back nicely, soon his scars will disappear, and he’ll be his gorgeous self again. He enjoys being outside with the other dogs, but as soon as everyone comes back in, he wants to be back in the house with the rest of the family. In true Pyr fashion, Jack likes to sleep a lot during the day and is relatively low energy for a dog of approximately one year in age. However there are times when he does play with his foster siblings in the backyard. If he lived in a household with a younger, energetic dog he would probably be very interactive with them and become a more active dog himself. In his foster home, sweet Jack lives with two adult Pyrs and he gets along with very well with them. He needs a companion dog in his forever home. He is fine in the house when his people are gone, but gets anxious without his fellow canine buddies. Jack does great on a leash and thoroughly enjoys his daily walks. He has free run of the house and enjoys plenty of bones which keep him occupied and out of mischief. He loves riding in the car once he can be convinced to get in it! He is very strong, so he will do best with a family that is able to load him into the car until he realizes that it’s something he wants to do. He could be fine in an apartment if he is walked regularly. He doesn’t seem to have an interest in toys, but maybe he’s still learning what they’re for! He can be funny sometimes, rolling happily in the grass. Despite everything Jack has been through, he has adjusted very well to being a family dog and is extremely low maintenance. He is very affectionate and loves nothing more than getting attention from his humans. His gentle demeanor will make him a perfect family dog for the right home that is able to give him the love and attention he deserves. All of our dogs require secure and VISIBLE fencing. Adoption Fee: $275 * Note to NW Adopters: The adoption fee does not include the cost of transport. There are many things YOU can do to help us: 1. Adopt! If this Gentle Giant looks like the one for you, fill out an adoption application today! 2. Foster! This is a temporary commitment that gives all dogs in need the assured time to find the loving home they deserve. Your benevolent decision to foster unquestionably determines whether a loving dog gets to live or die. 3. Donate! Safeguarding these Gentle Giants result in expenses that are in upwards $8/day. If veterinary care is needed, the costs exponentiate to $1,000+ for a single dog. Every penny you donate makes an impact when it comes to vet bills! If you were to make a one-time donation of just $25, you would be adding 3 more valuable days to the life of every rescued dog and provide the chance to find the home they have been waiting for their entire life. As always, all donations are gratefully accepted. If you are interested in adopting this dog or need further information, please contact GPRS at info@gprescuesociety.org or fill out our SHORT application form. Every dog adopted thru the GPRS program is up to date on all vaccinations, spayed/neutered and on heartworm preventative.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
