er greyhound and doing quite well. Coco is 8 years old. Her foster does not have a fenced yard and she walks nicely on leash. ________________________ Original Posting___________________________ Craigie O Neco is such a pretty girl with her dark face and beautiful brindling. She a sweet girl who is slightly reserved or cautious at first but warms up nicely. She's quiet, gives kisses and walks nicely on leash. She's in a foster home and after one day, her foster mom reported: "she is very, very sweet - slept in her crate without a peep, no accidents, interacting well with the others."--sounds like great start to me!! Craigie O Neco is 4 years old in June and cat workable in that she could be directed away from the cat. Since being in a foster home, she has gotten very used to the cat. Foster Update 7/12/2012 Craigie O Neco is a sweet girl who is happy to see you but is still a little shy - she does, however, love to be brushed and pet and loves hers squeaky toys. She is currently living with three large dogs, two small dogs, one cat, and a family with teenagers and gets along well with all of them. She does not hunt the cat down so I guess we can assume she is at the very least cat tolerant. She learned how to do the deck stairs in one day and taught herself how to go up the interior stairs in our duplex by herself. She has not shown any possessiveness with toys, food or people. She is potty trained - mastered that in one day too - I leave the crate door open day and night and she has full run of the house with not ever an accident. She enjoys walks and is a velcro girl when we do go for walks. I think that Craigie O Neco would do best with a family with older children or adults only since she is still a little shy. She would do greyt either as an only grey or a wonderful addition to an existing pack, she is so easy going and laid back - just a go with the flow kind of girl. Foster Update 9/3/2012 Craigie O Neco is one very sweet and smart girl. Last night she went to the back door and barked to go out to potty! She does not mind her crate but is so well behaved she does not even need one. She loves to play catch me if you can (in our fenced yard) and, of course, who could ever catch a retired racer! She adores playing with her toys as well but knows her inside and outside manners. She loves to be brushed with the furminator and does not mind getting her teeth brushed either. She walks nicely on the leash when we go for our daily walks. She is still slightly reserved but with time we have seen her happy personality emerge more and more. She is currently living with five other dogs and gets along well with all. I cannot say it enough - one very sweet, easy going girl.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
