y special girl, and not just because she is a tripod. She has a happy and loving personality and the best smile! When you enter a room and especially when you baby-talk to her, she scrunches her nose into the funniest, most endearing grin. Hattie knows that when you smile, the whole world smiles with you! Being a recent amputee doesn’t slow Hattie down one bit. She is completely unaware of the loss of a leg and is faster on 3 legs than any human on 2. It's a joy to watch her run and play like any dog. She adores long walks and the opportunity to explore and sniff. With her foster mom, Hattie has been taking twice daily one mile strolls walking at a very brisk pace. She could probably run in the Suburban Iditarod! She enjoys fetching balls, chewy bones and gazing out the front door at squirrels, birds and pedestrians going by. Hattie is calm, affectionate, gentle and a total love. She is a velcro dog who prefers to be right next to her person all day long. Working from home, she’s under the desk; cooking dinner, she’s parked at your feet; watching tv, she’s snuggled at your side. She has no trouble leaping onto the couch to chill with you, rolling over for chest and belly rubs. Hattie would love to sleep in the people bed but is a very good girl and will sleep through the night in her own doggie bed. She prefers not to be crated and, since she has great house manners, it’s really not necessary. She is 100% house trained and alerts with a whine or bark when it is time to go out. She gets down to business very quickly which is much appreciated in cold, inclement weather. Yet, she’s not a vocal dog. She is great in the car, eagerly leaping in without help, excited to join you on your errands and trips. Hattie is easy-going, obedient and a quick learner. She is food and treat motivated. Hattie likes to chase squirrels and birds and probably cats so she is best in a home without felines. Hattie prefers all your attention and would be best as an only dog in the home, or the first dog so she could meet and select her friends. House trained Good on leash Good in the Car Good with Kids Dog Selective No Cats * The adoption fee of $225 includes age-appropriate vaccines, initial de-worming, spay/neuter surgery, microchip and transport fee. * The application is the first step in all inquiries and adoptions Canine Compassion Fund - Online Adoption Application .caninecompassionfund/Forms/OnlineAdoptionApplication * Additional information is available on our site caninecompassionfund

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
