Meet Mr Risso Seashell Risso comes to us from San Jose Animal Care Center via San Jose Animal Advocates where he was treated by Tails of a Shelter Vet Risso is a 14 yr old, 30 lb Shiba Inu and American Eskimo Mix (best guesses here) NEUTERED MALE. He is also microchipped, vaccinated, free of parasites and has had senior labwork and a dental cleaning. Risso was dumped at the shelter because his family was moving out of state. We guess they didn't know ***insert sarcasm*** that it is no longer illegal to move pets across state lines. (Our eye muscles get such a workout when we read the surrender forms that these people fill out at the shelter). Risso is blind. It does not bother him, so it should not bother you and we won't say anything more about that other than dogs adapt well to blindness and they learn their environment and the cues you give them and they adapt to new homes quickly. Risso is crate trained, housebroken and walks well on a short leash (so that he does not run into things). He has not bothered the cats at the vet clinic (albeit he cannot see them so take that for what it is worth). He is a gem of a dog with all people. He loves other dogs. Risso is #adoptable and would love for that special someone to see past his blindness and give him a retirement home to spend his golden years. He is located in the SF Bay Area of CA and we will entertain REASONABLE out of area adoption inquiries but we will not ship him to you as if he were an Amazon package. You have to take some initiative and work with us to get him to you. If you are interested, please send us an email to beourpet@gmail.com To make a donation towards his medical care while in our rescue, please do so at www.paypal.me/UOH GENERAL INFO: Housebroken?: Yes Crate Trained?: Yes Leash Trained?: Yes, but needs to be short or he bumps into things Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: No Good with cats?: Yes, we think so (he cannot really see them) Good with dogs?: Yes Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: yes Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 5 Umbrella of Hope is a non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals off death row from local shelters. We offer rebates of adoption fees after completion of obedience classes and CGC titles. Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and given any additional treatments (dental work, bloodwork etc) as recommended by our vet. Some of our senior animals have sponsorships for their food/vet care/medicine for the rest of their life at our vet in Pittsburg, CA (94565) Adoptions to veterans of the US Armed Services are ALWAYS free to thank you for your service. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
