Italian Greyhound Dogs For Adoption in Lawrence, KS, USA

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound (short coat). Hello, my name is Luna and I’m a wee puppy (10 weeks old as of 4/15/2018). My favorite things to do are to explore and play and chew on things. My f

oster human says I’m the calmest puppy she’s met, but I’m still a puppy (also we might be on this thing called a honeymoon period). I don’t like it when I can’t see my human. Sometimes my foster human puts me in an exercise pen because I chew shoes and furniture and carpet and cabinets and walls and electrical cords but whatever I’m just exploring. I don’t mind the exercise pen but I don’t like it when I can’t see my human. When she leaves the room I whine really loud and push the ex-pen around until she comes back. I sleep in a crate at night and during the day while everyone is at work. I whine for a few minutes but then I calm down and go to sleep. I’ve only had a few accidents in my crate. I redirect quickly when my human says “no,” but my attention span is short and I need constant supervision. I’m also a little bit of a daredevil but my human keeps an eye on me so I don’t get injured. broken legs are a HUGE risk for Italian Greyhound puppies! I love to play with other dogs, but I’m still learning doggie behavior cues. I haven’t met a cat yet, but I think I would like to play with them. Some cats may not be okay with that. I haven’t met any young kids either, but I’ve heard sometimes when they try to be gentle they still might squeeze or tug a little too hard and I’m pretty small. My foster human says I’m about 80% potty trained. She takes me outside when I start to pace and sniff the floor. I also use potty pads but my aim isn’t great yet and sometimes I miss by a few inches. I do okay on a leash but I’d rather chew it than walk with it. From the foster human: Luna is a very sweet and inquisitive puppy but needs lots of supervision. She’s about 80% velcro dog; she loves to cuddle and would prefer to sleep in the human bed, but she also sleeps and plays and explores independently. An experienced IG home without young children would be preferred as she is still very young. However, Luna could be a great introduction to the breed for the right person. She will only be adopted out in the Missouri/Kansas area.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
