I like to think they are merit badges, each reflecting an experience that helped shape me into the young dog I am today. I am Charlie, a one year old Jack Russell mix and I am ready for my very own family. A few months ago I was left in the drop box at the Santa Rosa shelter with my seven litter mates. I was terrified and hungry and may not have made a good first impression. I watched all my littermates leave but no one wanted to give me a chance. Finally, someone from FLUFF Animal Rescue took me away from there on my Freedom Ride. At first, I didn't trust this family. There were other dogs and people and I didn't know how to act. I am learning, though. I get along with the other dogs now, as long as they don't get close to my toys. I love when the people pet me if they let me come to them. I am even learning to ride in cars, and love when we go to the park but I am still not sure about a leash. I hope there is someone looking for a brave, little survivor like me. I have so much love to share and I want my own home and family soon. Charlie is certainly a cute little guy. He has not had an easy first year of life but you would never know that by the joy he displays as he greets you. Charlie and 7 littermates were left in the drop box at the Santa Rosa animal shelter with no history. They were terrified of human contact and Charlie didn't like sharing his tiny space with his littermates. They separated him from the others so he was basically in solitary confinement for several months. Despite this rough beginning, Charlie is so loving and playful you would never know what a difficult beginning he had. Charlie loves his humans but doesn't seem to like sharing with other doggies yet. He is just learning how to play with toys and accept petting. He is very anxious and easily frighted by quick movements so needs someone who will be patient. Charlie is learning to like the leash and even has begun running around with the other dogs in the home. Even after just a few days, Charlie is learning his routine and his boundaries. He is SO excited when he sees his foster mom in the morning that it makes her smile. He enjoys exploring the back yard but only if his human is near by. Charlie is neutered, up to date on his shots, heart worm negative and has no health problems other than a small wound on his leg from his rough early days. He will be an amazing addition to some lucky home, but may need a little time and patience to adjust. If you would like to meet Charlie, the process begins with a brief online application here: .fluffanimalrescue/adoption-application Charlie's $150 adoption fee includes his neuter/microchip and all vaccinations, flea/tick and heartworm preventatives up to date. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
