g on Petfinder that I wanted to adopt...so I reached out to Joye since I was out of state. She said she typically does not do out of state adoptions but she checked my references and took a chance on me. Rescuing Ranger was the best decision I've ever made. He is now 12.5 and is the love of my life (and my husband is okay with that)!!!!! I returned to JR again in 2012 to adopt another dog. The attached picture is of me and my two JR rescues. I've always been an animal lover and I wish all animals could have a warm bed, a full belly, and unlimited snuggles each and every day of their short lives." ~ Debbie Bond Lenny was born around February 7, 2016 and weighs 15 lbs. Lenny was thought to be a Feist mix, but we'd like to throw in a touch of Jack Russell and feel he is likely mixed with several other fun dogs. Whatever his heritage he sure is a cutie and we are so glad we were able to save him. He is fun, funny, happy, and wonderful with all the other dogs. LOVES his toys and is submissive sweet and is coming close to wanting to smile at us. Lenny becomes a nice lap buddy in the evening to watch a little TV - love him!! This is all we know so far as we are learning as we go and so will you. The southern shelter feels it is embarrassing to ask humans why they must relinquish their dogs as the reason is so often financial in the coal mining area of Virginia. Update from Lenny: Shhhhh.....I overheard that I'm Joye's favorite dog! Probably because I snuggle, nuzzle, flirt, and act really, really, cute with her. I like to watch her and when she notices she always waves and smiles at me and I feel really special! All these dogs and she picks me as her favorite! I must be way cool!!! Funny thing was I heard her say something about my not being adopted right away because I'm not as cute and fluffy as some of the other dogs. I might have felt insulted hearing this, but then she said that when someone falls in love with me I will be the most beautiful dog in the world to them just like I am to her now! Longing for a real home, Lenny. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $425.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
