are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express from 12-4pm on Sat. April 7th & 12-3pm on Sun. April 8th or until adopted. If interested, please fill out an application if you would like the first opportunity to meet prior to the start of the event. (We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Hope is a 2 year old JRT mix who is part of the Seven Virtue Dogs. This week he's wearing a Superman Cape at his foster home because he is starting to feel like a brand new man. He learned how to run up and down the stairs, walk on a leash and hasn't had an accident in his house. That's the stuff of heroes! Give the boy a few days to settle in but then he is all about his people. Once he's in the arms of his people he's a total cuddler and snuggler. If you let him sleep with you, he will sleep all night and not move at all. He's not much of an explorer initially. He really is a velcro kind of dog who stays with his people. Once he develops a confidence in his people he will become more adventurous. He's currently living with another dog who has taught him how to play. They're currently in a tug-o-war competition. It's 2 to 1 in the other dog's favor. We're rooting for you Hope! Hope has lived with big and little dogs and he makes friends where-ever he goes. Sure it may take a few days but if you're looking for a friend for your dog, this is your man. Hey, btw, our little man Hope also is good with cats. He grew up with them. So bring on the cats. The Seven Virtues are seven sweet dogs who we rescued from a terrible hoarding situation, one of the worst we’ve seen in our almost twenty years of rescue. The hoarders reached out to us and begged us to come take their dogs. When we arrived, we realized we didn’t have the capacity to take all 30-40 of them into our rescue and we called Animal Control to contact other rescues to come help with the rest. Hope will need a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years (owned personally not a parent's or roommates dog and not petsitting a dog). If there are kids they need to be at least 10 years old. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
