uppy in one of our experienced foster homes. Because she is such a good mama she took on a few foster puppies to help another young mama who was struggling with her large litter and we just think Illinois is awesome. She can be just a tad shy but she warms up nicely and she is a sweet girl. Illinois is a sweet laid back girl who is happy to go for short walks with you. She is great with other dogs and loves to play. She would do fine with a less active family and will be fine left alone while you are at work as long as she gets a short walk in the morning and you come home and throw the ball for her. Illinois is great on and off leash. Once she is bonded to you and her recall is consistent you will have no problem taking her to off-leash parks. She does bark to alert you of things going on then usually settles down once you are aware of the situation. If you are looking for a sweet, laid back dog companion...Illinois could be your perfect match! This information is as up to date and accurate as possible for the dog in their current environment. All dogs and puppies will need time and training to adjust to their new surroundings and learn the rules of their new home. If you are interested in meeting one of our dogs, the first step is completing the adoption application, available with our adoption process on our website at www.labsandmore.org. Your adoption includes the spay or neuter, current vaccinations, microchip, and other services provided while in our care. The safety and health of our puppies is priority one so we only allow approved applicants to meet and handle puppies. Please understand everything we do is for the dogs and conducted by our kind and generous volunteers. We rely solely on donations and we do not profit from a dog's adoption. Labs and More is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that operates on donations and time dedicated to this cause by volunteers. Your adoption will save the life of future dogs in need. Labs and More makes no guarantees regarding the behavior, breed, or age of the dogs in our care. Although we strive to provide necessary medical care to dogs in our care, we cannot predict future or current medical needs whether they were symptomatic or not at the time of adoption.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
