tion Observations with Cats: she should not live in a home with cats Observations with Kids: Good with children Currently Living at: DC area Foster home This beautiful gal is affectionate, loyal, and loving. Bella is basically an oversized lap dog at home, and loves being close to her humans. She has come a long way since we rescued her. Initially fearful and dog-reactive, this girl attended training classes with her amazing foster and has learned how to be polite and confident, all with just some positive reinforcement and consistency. She&#;s smart and eager to please, which makes her highly trainable. From her foster: Meet Bella! She is a beautiful, loyal girl that loves to run and is just a bundle of energy. She wants to please her "people" and has done really well with training as she is extremely food motivated. Although she has energy, she can be gentle when need be with the proper commands, but overall would make a great companion for an equally energetic family! She tends to get overwhelmed in large social gatherings (such as adoption events) and it is recommended for potential adopters to meet her in her foster environment, where she is comfortable and happy and can best show her true colors. Bella will need an adopter who is committed to giving her lots of exercise, as well as continuing with her training. We recommend another training class for her with her adopter since it is about training the human as much as it is about training the dog! A class also has the benefit of building a closer bond between dog and human. We want to ensure her forever family continues to reinforce the positive behaviors so she can remain a confident and well-adjusted pup. This gal has been overlooked for so long because of her reactivity towards other dogs, and she wonders if anyone will give the "new Bella" a real chance at a loving forever home. She has worked hard for it, and she deserves nothing less. Her foster reports that she is crate trained and has not had any accidents in the home. Like most shelter dogs, Bella may need a refresher on house training and crate training. We ask all of DC PAWS&#; fosters to work on both house and crate training with their foster dog. The adoption fee for this dog is $. If you are interested in adopting Bella, please submit an adoption application at dcpawsrescue/adoption-info/.DC PAWS Rescue does our best to provide accurate and complete information about our adoptable animals. Please note that we cannot make any guarantees about age or breed; we rely upon our rescue partners and their veterinarians to make those assessments. We also cannot make any guarantees about housebreaking and animal temperament, as animals can behave differently through transition and in different environments. Our shelter partners provide a basic vet screening for each animal we rescue, which includes necessary vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, and spay/neuter (unless the animal is too young or otherwise deemed by the vet to not be a good candidate for surgery). Please note that this is not a comprehensive medical exam and as such, may not identify any and all medical issues, though our goal is to flag any obvious health issues through the basic vet screening. We share all medical records with adopters and flag any known issues prior to adoption finalization. About DC PAWS Rescue Our rescue is an all-volunteer, foster-based dog and cat rescue in the DC area. We rescue from rural areas in the south, as well as local DC area shelters, such as Prince Georges County, MD and Wicomico County, MD. BE A FOSTER: Fosters make it possible for DC PAWS to save and care for homeless, neglected and abandoned animals! Sponsors help us provide critical medical care, food, boarding and other support for animals facing euthanasia. Individuals who sponsor a dog or cat receive special recognition on the animal&#;s profile.&#; Sponsorships can also be made in honor or memory of a loved one, and you may designate to whom DC Paws Rescue should provide notice of your gift. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
