adoption requirements and specifics for this dog. Websites such as Petfinder and Adopt-A-Pet may not show all the information that we have listed. FOSTER PARENT COMMENTS: Jerry is a bit timid but a wonderful, sweet dog. He is a mix....maybe hound/lab/shepherd. He gets along with my dog that is 7 years old and plays well with my neighbors dog that is still a puppy. He is not aggressive but seems confident. We do not have a cat so it is unknown how he will react to one. Jerry does not live with small children but has met them on walks and seems to do fine. He is very calm for a young dog and has a great personality. He is generally a quiet dog. He whines when he has to go outside to do his business or when he needs water but otherwise he doesn't bark. So as long as he was given regular exercise, he probably could live in an apartment. He would enjoy having his own yard but again, exercise it the key to keeping him happy and content. Jerry is house broken and crate trained. He sleeps through the night in his crate from 10:00/10:30 pm to 6:30 am. He does very well in his crate. He will whine when he needs to go outside. During the day, he goes outside once every 4-5 hours. He may be able to go longer but right now, that is our routine. He has moderate energy. He loves to play with other dogs or humans. But when there is nothing going on, he is happy to chew on an appropriate chew toy and just chill out. Jerry does really well on walks. He used to lag behind but now usually walks right next to me. He is easy to walk. His personality is awesome !! He is very soft natured, easy to walk, sleeps through the night , does not bark, happy to be indoors and outdoors and looks very cute. These are the reasons someone should adopt Jerry and make him a part of your family. He will be a great pet! EVERY DOG HAS A STORY: Jerry was found as a stray after Hurricane Florence. A rural vet took him in and was able to keep him until BFPA could admit him into our rescue group. He is now looking for his forever home. Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed. Applicants must live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized. Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions. We therefore require applicants to live within an hours drive of Cary NC. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
