aundry, these gals will be your best friends. Frida and Gala are approximately six year old, yellow labs with the most mellow temperament. They were turned in together at a shelter. At first we thought they were litter mates, but Frida seems a bit older, perhaps up to 8, and could possibly be Gala’s mother. It seems both dogs were used for breeding which is not surprising given their extra sweet demeanor. Frida and Gala want nothing more than to be reassured you will give them lots of pets and love every day. They spend most of the day cuddling on their dog bed or following their foster mom from room to room. They will nudge your hand for lots of pets or patiently sleep by your feet waiting for belly rubs. At the end of a long day, they will snore loudly to let you know they’re totally relaxed! They love their humans and get very excited when visitors come over. They also enjoy walks and walk well on a leash. See the video of them enjoying their walk. Gala loves stuffed animals and socks. She will pile them all on her bed and not share. Frida is highly food motivated and will steal food off the counter or table if you’re not watching. Thankfully she can be redirected easily. The pups get overly excited for treats and sometimes nibble your hand by mistake. Their fosters have been working on teaching them to take treats gently and they will need someone who can keep up this training. But they can both catch a treat from an impressive distance! Frida has had a few accidents in the home. She was likely raised in a concrete kennel and is still learning that grass is the right place to potty. She would do great with a dog door or regular access to a yard to continue this reinforcement. Gala is completely house broken. They are both crate trained and sleep through the night with no issues. They also seem to be content left alone for a few hours because they have each other. Like true SoCal residents, they are not fans of the rain and much prefer to stay cuddled up indoors. Maybe their new family can test out water again during the summer. My Ideal Home Frida and Gala are currently living with kids and a small dog in their foster home. They are dog and child friendly but don’t pay a lot of attention to either. Their ideal home would have no other dogs or dogs who are also really mellow. The home would definitely have a yard for them to lounge in the sun. They’d love someone who is home most of the time, but would do fine left alone for a few hours each day, especially if they have a warm, dry place to sleep. Primarily they just want a home with humans ready to give them pets, love and some delicious treats. In return they’ll give companionship, a few laughs, plenty of snuggles back and some great exercise as you enjoy daily walks together. Want to Adopt me? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
