If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, .dpsrescue for an application. Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: .facebook/DPSRescue This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express from 12-4pm on Sat. Aug. 25th & 11-3pm on Sun. Aug. 26th or until adopted. If interested, please fill out an application if you would like the first opportunity to meet at the event. (We will only pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Serendipity is a 4-5-month-old Lab who was surrendered along with her sibling, Fate. We will be looking for separate homes for each puppy, as we do not place siblings together. She currently weighs about 40.8 lbs and is on the larger end for her age. She will be in the 60-70lbs range when full grown. She and her sister are both very energetic puppies, as labs typically are, and will need a lot of exercise, so an active family that loves running, hiking, biking and all things outdoors would be perfect. Lots of walks for these girls! Serendipity is a very playful puppy that could be perfectly content chasing a ball in the yard for hours at a time. She also loves to go on walks and runs, chew on her bully sticks, and curl up on the couch. She really thinks she is a lap dog, despite her size, and loves nothing more than to cuddle with her favorite people. She really is such a happy, goofy puppy. Dippy has not proven herself to be a digger or chewer, but very well could become one. She is, after all, a lab! Keeping her occupied with a Nylabone or a Kong will help avoid any mistakes, as her foster family has been reinforcing. Serendipity is currently being crate trained, and although it was brand new for her, she's learning! She's also working on housebreaking and basic obedience, both of which were also brand new to her. Serendipity excels at polite leash behavior and loose leash walking, which is important with a big dog like she will become. Serendipity currently lives in a foster home with another dog, and is learning from him how to run around and be a complete goof. Serendipity's adopters will need a clear plan regarding training and socialization. These are labs who came to us with absolutely no training done, so they will require a family who is ready to put in the work to train a dog of their size. She is only an option to go to a home that has had a dog in the last three years. Unless the children have big dog experience, Serendipity is only an option for a home with children over the age of 9, as she doesn't quite know her manners yet.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
