Remember me?! You can just call me the Miracle Man! Keep reading to see how far I’ve come and the drastic turnaround I was able to pull off! If you remember me, you’ll remember I was not at all healthy. In fact, the people at LEARN deemed me to be in hospice care because my health was just that bad. BUT you have to believe in miracles to see how I’ve managed to completely turn my heath around! After I came into rescue, it was determined I had a lot of health issues that needed to be addressed. My diabetes weren't regulated, I was missing lots of fur, and then it was found that I had a thyroid condition. Fast forward several months and this is where the miracle comes in! After extensive glucose testing, thyroid screens, and lots and lots of TLC, I'm healthier than ever! My fur has completely grown back and is smooth and soft unlike before. While my diabetes isn’t perfect, I’ve been considered by the vet to be in the safe zone now and my thyroid is now managed. Pretty impressive for a roughly 11 year old guy!! The downfall of my health concerns is the cost of my medication each month. My insulin is roughly $200 a month and my thyroid medication is $40 a month. I’m not cheap to keep but I am SO worth the love I’ll give you! I love to follow my foster mom around and lay at her feet. I do great riding in a car and I don’t have to be kenneled if you leave. I do need to be let out several times a day though because of my diabetes (I drink a lot). I am also blind due to my diabetes so I’ll need a home that is willing to help me adapt. I never leave my yard though so you don’t have to worry about me wandering away! I learn the ins and outs of each place I go fairly quickly! I really am the perfect companion. Can I make my way into your home and heart? The kind people at LEARN have even offered to sponsor my medication for a few months for my new home! Please consider a gentle old soul like me. 6/23/18 Not an update we were expecting for this sweet boy... When Grizzly came to us, we knew he had Diabetes. We are still having trouble getting his numbers right, and his eye sight has gotten extremely worse in just the few weeks we’ve had him. He’s also been diagnosed hypothyroid for which he’s taking medication. The Vet strongly suspects Cushing's as well, which is more than likely why his insulin levels can’t even out. She said his quality of life will quickly diminis h. He’s already lost weight . . in just a week. The Vet is concerned with his loss of appetite most days as well as how quickly he’s lost his eyesight. It breaks our heart. We will keep him comfy and happy here until he’s ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge. PLEASE consider donating to Grizzly's hospice care . L.E.A.R.N. thanks you from the bottom of our hearts. 6/8/18 Hi everyone! Grizzly here. I was surrendered when my owner couldn’t take care of me anymore. I’m diabetic and just recently learned I’m hypothyroid. So I'm taking medication for that as well. The Vet is also thinking I might have Cushing's, but we need to get my thyroid and diabetes under control first before tackling another issue. I’ll also need to get neutered. I’m great with kids and ignore other dogs. The Vet believes I’m around 10 years old. I’m very well-behaved, stay in the yard, and am a good car rider. However sometimes I can’t help myself from checking out the goodies on the counter! I follow my foster mom around like her shadow and have settled in here nicely. Grizzly is a sweet 10ish year old with diabetes and possible Cushing's disease.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
