this Sun. (Apr. 9) from 12 – 2 PM at the Unleashed by Petco (1855 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20007)*** CARLY NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Carly Breed: Lab Mix Approximate Age: 2-3 Years Old SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 75 lbs Has Lived With: other dogs Currently Living at: Shelter in South Carolina. Carly is looking for her FUR-ever home! Special adoption considerations: Carly has entropian eye from someone who actually tried to tack her lids as a puppy. She has had her surgery, and hopefully there will not be any repercussions caused by this horrible person! Hi there! My name is Carly and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. Somehow I ended up in a shelter in South Carolina. I may look like I'm crying in my pictures but that did not stop me from wagging my tail at everyone who stopped by to see me at the shelter. My tears are because I have entropian eye- this means that my eyelids roll in and cause my eyes to constantly water. I did have my surgery, and hopefully there will be no repercussions. The amazing folks at Lucky Dog also tell me that I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft yellow coat with a pink (human) nose! I've also got big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 2 - 3 years old and 74 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs. They are not sure how I will interact with kids or cats yet, but the Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! I’ve been daydreaming about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. I don’t think I would be able to stop wagging my tail if I had my very own human who will give me lots of belly rubs and get me cool toys to play with. If my new family would take me to obedience classes so that I could use my smarts to learn tons of new tricks that would be amazing. If you think I might be the right dog for you, then please let my adoptions coordinator know! I do hope to hear from you soon! Woofs and tail wags, Carly Like most shelter dogs, CARLY may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Donna at donnao@LuckyDogAnimalRescue.org! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
