ruly love having her in our home and enjoy her so much. Meredith arrived to rescue with her siblings (she was the smallest of the bunch) from Alabama. She was quiet, mild-mannered, and even a bit timid/shy. After being with us now for a few weeks she has warmed-up to us and is beginning to come out of her shell, not as afraid of the big, unknown world around her. Being she is small and it’s chilly, we have her sleep with us at night, which she thoroughly enjoys. She curls-up in a little ball between us, always wanting to snuggle – not sure if it’s for warmth or the comfort of knowing you’re there, or perhaps a bit of both. Recently she has started to sleep on the sofa in our master bedroom, so, surprisingly, we may find her there when we go to bed and/or when we wake-up. It’s great to see her becoming independent and gaining confidence. She does eat in her crate and stay in there when we’re not home, not complaining about it – unless she knows you’re home and wants to be with you instead (then it’s a mild whine). She’s doing really well at potty-training, though still may have an occasional accident. She always wants to be with or near you (or, particularly, our resident dog – she loves to lie with and next to her, though our resident dog isn’t always a fan, ha!), enjoying your company, your warmth, and your love. She doesn’t enjoy being held much, or even being on your lap, rather she prefers to be near or next to you. Meredith is really the sweetest, most petite of puppies. She isn’t the typical super-playful, full-of-energy kind, rather she is more laid-back, has bouts of playfulness, but mostly likes to nap with you, get treats (when she goes potty/poop outside), and just be a part of the family. She knows ‘sit’ and ‘down,’ as in lay-down, and happily does both for a treat. At meal time she knows to go in her crate and sit, waiting for her dish to be set-down. She will quietly wait for you to come back for her, opening the door to go outside post-meal. She loves to run outside, through the leaves, zipping around the yard, and playing with our resident dog. She will roll-over on her back when she comes back to you, sometimes having a little submissive or excited potty leak out. (Also the reason why we let her out of her crate without baby-talking or petting her after getting home from work in the afternoon. She does best just going straight outside to do her deeds, then you can snuggle and baby-talk all you want – she loves it!) Meredith would truly benefit from obedience training and becoming a permanent, loved member of a household. She is doing great with structure and a schedule and will only improve! She is a quick learner, smart, small, but has a huge heart and really has fun being around other dogs and kids (hasn’t seen a cat yet, but as a puppy she’d do great with them)!" Meredith's adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, spay, prepaid microchip, dewormed, Rabies vaccine, DAPP vaccine, Bordetella vaccine, heartworm and flea/tick preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee: $450.00

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
