able to be a loved member of a family, never being able to be a dog. We found Dixie after she had given birth to eight dogs, under a house in the middle of nowhere Mississippi. The owner of the house said she had seen Dixie around for the past five years, and this was the first time she was able to get close to her, and able to save her from a life on the streets. Once she got her hands on Dixie and her babies she reached out to us, and asked us to save them, and thankfully we were able to. We speculate that Dixie is 5 years old, but she has had a hard life, so we can't know for sure. We do know she isn't a puppy, and she got a few years until she is a senior (8 years old). Here is what we do know about Dixie: She is amazingly sweet. She is in a foster home with a dozen other dogs, both puppies, and adults, big and small. Dixie loves everyone. She has such a joy for life now that she is saved. Dixie adores her foster dad and although she is timid, she leans into pets, and scratches, and kind gentle words. Dixie's foster dad has had a lot of foster dogs in his time, and he swears Dixie is the sweetest, most gentlest girl he has ever had the pleasure of taking care - and that is saying a lot! Dixie has had a lot of litters in her life, so her body will never be the beautiful lab body it once was, but thats okay because she has the shiniest eyes, softest fur, and biggest heart. In fact we would speculate that Dixie is as close to pure bred of a lab as you can find - she has webbed feet, loves water, is super smart, and is 80 pounds of sweet gentle best friend. She is also heartworm negative, spayed, and up to date on her shots. This beautiful big girl is house broken and crate trained and good on a leash. There is nothing wrong with her besides the fact that she needs a family to love her for the rest of her life. Is that you?

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
