iever mix. I’m everything you want from a Labrador – I’m sweet, I’m loving, I’m housebroken, and I’m beautiful! I’m on the smaller side for a Lab – I’m only 40 pounds, but I’m spayed and have had all my shots. My foster mom says I’m super smart, too! Plus I’m good with cats and other dogs. I am a high energy dog – I love to run and play, and my favorite thing is to fetch my B-A-L-L. I am still very much a puppy in some ways, and my foster home is working on teaching me not to jump up on people. I am also learning to walk calmly on the leash. I want to please, I do, and I want to make you happy, but life is just so exciting when you are a two year old Labrador – it’s hard to remember not to pull on the leash -- all those sights - all those sounds - all those wonderful smells ! I want a family of my very own, so much, a family that will play with me, and take me for walks, and throw my B-A-L-L. You see, I’m so smart I can also spell ! I would have so much fun with you, I just know it. And when I get a little older, I’m looking forward to this activity called snuggling, too. I don't really know why, but little kids and all of their noise make me nervous, so I would prefer to live in a home where there isn't a lot of noise and lots of people coming and going. I think if the kids are older and chill, I would be okay with that. I LOVE my foster mom and just can't help barking when new people stop by. She needs me to protect her!! But if the new person gives me time to relax and maybe even has a tasty treat, I warm up quickly. Do you have a B-A-L-L? Is it lonely? How about you? Do you want a beautiful blonde Labrador to love and pet and take for walks? If so, pick me – oh pick me !! Since Lucy is a high-energy dog, her adoptive family will be required to complete an obedience course as a term of her adoption contract (provided free of charge by Last Hope). All of our animals are altered, heartworm-tested, and current on all vaccinations. They must be kept as indoor pets and supervised when outdoors. Background and veterinary checks will be performed on all qualified applicants as well as home visits.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
