irst of week of May 2016, three weeks after our beloved dog Harold d ied. He recently starred as TOTO in Penfield High School's production of The Wizard of Oz! Our Joyful Rescue is one of the best decisions our family has ever made – Cosmo has truly been a wonderful friend and member of our family. For the holiday season, we thought that the best way to truly celebrate was to sponsor a transport on my family’s name. All four of our dogs (and our cats over the years) have come from various rescue organizations, and everybody in the Gabbey family recognizes the importance of animal rescue groups, and the dedication it takes to provide love and comfort for these amazing dogs and cats. My parents have owned three schnauzers – Daffy, Darby and Daisy – and my brother’s dog, Alvy, was a part of the family until he died this past summer at the amazing age of 16! My brother’s wife was the long-time director of the Baltimore, Maryland ASPCA, and continues animal volunteer work in Savannah, Georgia, so dogs are very near and dear to all our hearts. The “ Gabbey ” transport will hopefully not only save wonderful and loving animals, but also spread as much happiness to as many families as possible. We want adoptive Joyful Rescue families to have as much love and fun with these rescue animals as we have had with Cosmo." ~ Paul Gabbey Huge thanks to Paul Gabbey and his Cosmo for such a generous, life-saving donation! Louis was born about February 24, 2016 and weighs about 50 lbs. He is wonderful with all of us and the other dogs, really nice boy! He entered the vets office with a wicked case of fleas that caused a severe skin infection. He stayed with the vet until the next trip and he has fully recovered. No doubt he'd enjoy fleas control in his next home. He is a doll full of kisses and wags and can't wait to meet you! This is all we know so far as the staff at the high kill shelter feels asking questions embarrasses the previous owners as the reason for surrender is so often financial. We will be learning as we go and so will you. We did feel he had a bit too much interest in cats to live with any. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $325.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY. Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM JOYFUL RESCUES We keep our pet list as up-to-date as possible. As soon as a pet is adopted, it is removed from the list. If a pet is still showing, it is still available for adoption. Can't Adopt Me? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
