ll sweetly ask to be petted and have her butt scratched, or she'll roll over for you to scratch her tummy. She's not shy at all when it comes to getting affection and attention. All of the volunteers gush over how sweet she is. She is not comfortable around very small children but very happy to be greeted by adolescents and adults. Maude is still a youngster so will want a fairly active family to help her shed some of those extra shelter pounds. She's doing great in her basic obedience training and is great on a leash. If you're looking for an all-around devoted companion to accompany you on those errands, walks, tv watching, and napping then look no further. She's had a rough time before the rescue stepped in. She was originally found as a stray and lived at a vet's office for a year in a small cage. When the vet said he would euthanize her a client begged that she be sent to animal control instead thinking she would have a good chance of adoption there. Unfortunately no one came for her and she ended up on the euthanasia list again. Maude was finally and is so appreciative of being pulled out of the kill shelter and has shown herself to be an extremely sweet and affectionate pup. She loves to go for car rides -- will ride right up front and eager to help out with directions if needed. She's a super snuggle bunny who's ready for her forever home. Age: 3 Years Old Weight: 61 Pounds Vetting: Spay/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm negative Training: House-trained, crate-trained Temperament: Good with cats and some dogs, but not small, unpredicatble kids Contact adopt@doggieharmony.org with questions or complete/send an Adoption Application. We look forward to hearing from you. This adoptable is not in the Doggie Harmony program; s/he is a courtesy listing on behalf of the kind person who is caring for this pet until a forever home is found. There will be a fee to reimburse for the cost of its vetting/care; it may vary by caregiver/animal. Additionally, you will be asked to complete an application and allow a home visit to ensure the pet is a good fit for your home/lifestyle. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
