TION AVAILABLE AT THELASTRESORTRESCUE.COM. WE CANNOT RESPOND TO GENERAL INQUIRES ABOUT A DOG WITHOUT AN APPLICATION ON FILE. Meet Barney! Barney is so lucky, and trust me, these dogs know how lucky they truly are when they are saved at the very last minute, like Barney was. He was literally hours from death when The Last Resort had a foster family step up to help him and saved his life!! He is probably a shepherd/ lab mix. He is the funniest boy, about 1 1/2 years old and 60lbs. Neutered, great with other dogs and strangers, is good around children and cats. He is such a playful boy. He loves TOYS: stuffed animals, Nyla bones, etc. The toy box is his most favorite thing and he needs a home that will encourage playtime and buy him toys. Barney is currently undergoing treatment for heartworms but is ready for adoption through THE LAST RESORT. The rescue will continue to treat Barney until he is heartworm negative. This guy will be a fabulous addition to anyone’s home and will bring joy and laughter into your days. He is in his foster home in NC but can be transported to MD or NJ for an approved adopter. Update from foster mom 10/15 - Barney is pretty much a laid back boy. He likes to play with my dogs. He likes stuffed animals, really loves Nylar bones the best. He likes real bones also. In other words, he loves to chew. But will not chew shoes, socks, furniture or other important things. He has not seen any cats around me so I don't I know how he is with cats. He WILL chew through leashes very quickly. He has gone through 3 of mine. So his new foster or adopter needs to know this so they can be sure to keep him safe. He rode tethered in my truck when I picked him up and by the time I drove 2 miles, he was loose. He could accidentally escape if his people aren't paying close attention. He eats very well. He is on the thin side. He is good in his crate, no accidents at all. As far as house training, he has had one tinkle in the house, but I let him out very frequently and watch him very closely. He's smart though and will figure this out in no time. I have fenced in backyard and he loves to run and play. He will also play in the house, but he mostly plays with the toys himself. I keep him in a very large crate at night. I keep his food and water and blanket in there for him also. He does not do any damage to the crates at all. When I have to leave the house, he goes in the garage with his food, water, toys, blanket and Nylar bones. He is fine in the garage, no destruction of anything. I took him to a farmers market with me 2 days ago on a leash. He loved all of the strangers who petted him. He was not afraid of anyone. He did like the kids also. He catches food like a champ, and will sit on command for a treat. He is very treat motivated. He walks right into his crate and sits down. I shut and secure the doors. Then he gets 3 milk bones. He is very intelligent and an extremely loyal dog and loves attention. Someone has trained him to not jump on other people. He does want to jump on people, but doesn't. He barks if he does hears something outside, which is a good thing in my opinion. Overall, he is a very loving playful sweet pup. Update on 10/23/16 - Look at that smile!!! Barney is another wonderful example of an excellent dog just waiting for his happily ever after. This boy sat in a high kill shelter in GA & was held over TWICE. He was not going to be held over a 3rd time so we had to swoop into action fast to save his life. Barney is friendly with almost all of the dogs in his foster home, he's potty trained, crate trained, & LOVES a nice warm spot on the couch to snuggle up next to you. He has a baby blanket that he absolutely adores & must be covered up with & this boy is obsessed with his toys. He knows where all the toys are at all times & loves to play with all of them! He's just great. He's very active, loves going for walks, loves getting out socializing. He knows no enemies. He would do best having a fenced in yard to run & play. He is UTD on all vaccines & is neutered. Want a big love bug? This is your guy! Adoption Application http://www.thelastresortrescue.com/adoptionapplication.htm

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
