r and her sister that I’m also fostering. She’s looks like she might have been the runt of the litter so she has to make up for it in attitude. She’s also very sweet and she will sit and whine at the pen when my husband is not around – so apparently she likes him better. She’s very smart and has learned how to push the end of the pen away from the couch to get into the rest of the house. She loves to play and she doesn’t mind rain or snow which is really a good thing being that she’s from Texas! She seems to whine when she has to go out (which is often) so we’ve been putting her out every 30 – 60 minutes but this seems to be working. She also comes back to the door when she want to be let in (I have to chase her sister down to get her back in the house). She inhales her food so I may start her on a slow feeder and see if this helps (again it could be that she was the runt because her sister will lay on the ground and casually eat). Willow doesn’t seem to be too mouthy yet and tends to chew on her sister or toys but this could change as her adult teeth come in. She sleeps in a crate with her sister and so far the longest stretch through the night was from 12 – 5 a.m. before needing to go out. I’m starting to crate train them to see how long they can stay by themselves before getting noisy (so far 20 minutes, but like I mentioned they have to go out every 30 – 60 minutes.) But it takes time and they are still very young so as they get older they will be able to “hold it” longer. Everything will be a learning process but they are trainable and they LOVE food so it should be easy. Willow will make anyone a wonderful addition to their family. This pup was rescued from a high kill shelter in Texas with littermates. This litter is currently available for preadoption holds. They will eb available for meet and greets andnto go home after 2/1. We have no additional back story or update for this dog at this time. When we do, it will be updated here. This is all the information we have currently. Approved Applicants may make the adoption fee payment by clicking donate above. Partial adoption fees will not hold a dog. Dogs adopted with our rescue come with FREE training from #GoodPup to help you build strong bonds from the start! If upon meeting the dog of your choosing at your scheduled pickup time you find that you aren't a good match, your deposit will be fully refunded. Adoption fees include vaccines up until time of adoption, microchip, spay/neuter and 1st 30 days of free Pet insurance. We are not affiliated with Pet First pet insurance. (you have to sign up for the insurance or it will not go into effect). Adoption fees help cover the medical care of the animals while he or she waits for a new home, as well as food and transportation costs. These fees help to provide care for the other animals in the shelter or rescue group who may have medical bills that are much higher than any possible adoption fee. The money also acts as a donation to help support the organization as a whole, allowing the group to continue its efforts to rescue and rehome pets. The dogs in our care are fostered in Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico. While all dogs are picked up during our scheduled times, sometimes transport dates change due to unforeseen circumstances. More questions? Read our FAQs here: 4p4l/faqs/ Breed labels are a "best guess" by a shelter veterinarian and cannot be guaranteed. A new study has concluded that (in layman's terms), breed assumption is NOT indicative of behavior in mixed breed dogs. Therefore, if a dog looks presumably to be a German Shepherd breed, one cannot assume the dog will have a high prey drive. From the study: "Although many physical traits were associated with breeds, behavior was much more variable among individual dogs. In general, physical trait heritability was a greater predictor of breed but was not necessarily a predictor of breed ancestry in mutts. Among behavioral traits, biddability—how well dogs respond to human direction—was the most heritable by breed but varied significantly among individual dogs. Thus, dog breed is generally a poor predictor of individual behavior and should not be used to inform decisions relating to selection of a pet dog" - .science/doi/10.1126/science.abk0639

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
