as very painful and had a large growth on one upper eye lid. The growth was bleeding and we can't imagine how uncomfortable and painful it was for her. Heaven knows wherever she was before, whomever’ s dog she was, did not take good care of her. I was helping out at the boarding area the day Carla brought her back and immediately fell in love with her old soul, as did my husband the next day when he came out to volunteer. We got her all cleaned up - which required a second sudsing! - and we could tell just that made her feel a little better. We brought her home to foster her the following day and she's getting along great with all her foster brothers and sisters. She's discovered dog beds and goes from one to another to another, always finding a comfortable spot to rest. Gladys had her visit to the vet yesterday and was diagnosed with Laryngeal Paralysis. This means her prognosis isn't great and she can't be sedated. There is a surgery to repair it but the risks outweigh the benefits and given her age (12+), it wouldn't be fair to even try. The doctor was able to fix the growth on her eye but it may return in time. She has severe arthritis in her spine, many of the vertebrae are almost fused together. So, our mission is to make Gladys as comfortable as she can be and spoil her with love for the rest of her days. She is a lover and will nuzzle her head in to your chest and she's become my new shadow, following me around whenever she's not on one of those dog beds! Fostering or especially, adopting senior dogs is incredibly rewarding. Some dogs have never known being inside or being loved and getting special attention. We've seen dogs in rough condition flourish when given just the simplest things like a comfortable spot to lay, nutritious food, and most importantly - love. Even though our time with them may be short and it's hard to think about loosing them, we do this because it's all about them - not us. We can tough out the sadness that comes more often because we know we did everything in our power to make their last years good ones. Furry Kids' Refuge is in need of good quality dog and puppy food with meat as the first ingredient. You can drop off donations at our weekly adoption events at the Lee's Summit Petco (1860 NW Chipman Road, Lee's Summit, MO), Saturdays only from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. Would you like to foster a Furry Kid? Furry Kids' Refuge will supply the food & vet care while you supply the basic house rules & love.......win-win for all!! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
