RAINED: Yes; never had an accident! VETTING DONE: Spayed, fully vaccinated, dewormed, 30 day topical de-flea, rabies vaccs, microchipped, tested for HW (lightly pos; being treated). GETS ALONG WITH OTHER CATS/DOGS? Most definitely YES! Baby is SO gentle and easy going with other dog friendly pets, it’s totally amazing! She is very submissive to the foster home’s tiny Chihuahuas and Bishon/poodle mix. Foster home does not have any cats, so that's unknown. CHILDREN? Baby’s foster home has occasional well-mannered visiting children; Baby Girl has not shown any negative issues. SPECIAL NEEDS: Slow kill heartworm treatment is currently in progress - OOTW will continue to pay for treatment after adoption, for her new owner. BIO: Baby was found as a free roaming stray, dragging a chain, in Conway on Feb. 3, 2018 and taken in by her foster mom. She has been an inside dog ever since, with access to a doggy door. After asking neighbors and getting more info, it was discovered that she had been neglected and chained. She managed to break free and jumped the previous owner’s fence, then went visiting, looking for attention and much needed affection. She easily became accustomed to her foster home's doggie door, then she jumped her foster's small picket fence, and came home with a small caliber gunshot in her upper nose! Her foster mom took her to the closest vet for assessment and x-ray, only to find that it was beyond his expertise, so Baby Girl was sent home with antibiotics to prevent infection. The foster mom decided to ask OOTW for help. OOTW had a top rated specialist vet to evaluate Baby to see if an endoscopy to remove the bullet was possible - he determined that would actually do more damage to remove the fragments than leaving it. NO FUTURE HEALTH ISSUES ARE EXPECTED. The vet said that Baby Girl is lucky. Despite her "ruff" life so far, she still trusts everyone and and is never wary of a new face. She even loves to greet the UPS person! She learned to use the doggie door quickly and has never had an accident in the house. She is super smart and learns commands within only 2-3 tries. She heals very well on lead. Baby loves to cuddle and thinks she's a lap dog. Baby prefers to sleep on top of the covers at the foot of the bed. Her fur and ears are velvet soft and she loves to roll over for belly rubs. *Baby MUST HAVE AT LEAST A SIX FOOT PRIVACY FENCE -OR- ELECTRIC FENCE -OR- STRICTLY WALKED ON A LEASH WHEN OUTSIDE.* OUT OF STATE/OUT OF AREA? OOTW does not arrange for transport or ship - Baby's foster mom is willing to travel up to two hours radius of Conway, AR. Otherwise, please be willing and able to make plans to personally acquire this pet. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
