elieve Sadie to be a young (around 2 years old) lab mix. We where made aware of her thru our KY rescue partner when someone was giving the whole family away for free on an internet site. It seems pretty clear that Sadie was someone's pet at one time and they put a good deal of time into training her. She is completely house trained and will whine at the door when she has to go out. Sadie will even sit while you secure her leash. We have discovered she knows basic commands like sit, paw, & lay down. Her leash manners are not to bad. We use a freedom harness to eliminate some pulling. She really only pulls when she smells deer or rabbits in the vicinity. We have been working on the command "wait" when this happens and she has been responding really well. Sadie loves to go on long walks, she enjoys the fresh air and all of nature's surroundings. She is not a super sniffer during a walk unless she is on the trail of something. I often think she would excel at nose work, or would make an excellent tracker. Most times on our walks she leads the way and finds our way back home thru the many paths we have taken. Sadie is a real people person as well. She loves absolutely everyone she meets. It's very common for her to approach everyone we meet on our outings. At our first adoption event, Sadie met a baby in a carrier and very politely sniffed the top of the babies head. She loves people so much she is not shy about showing it. Many times she will give her foster mom a very gentle hug. Sadie has proven to do well with other dogs but we believe she would be perfectly fine being the center of someone's universe as well. We have not had her cat tested up to this point but can certainly do so if the need arises. She does perfectly fine in the house when left unattended and has not once attempted to jump up on the couch but will lay on the floor next to you. Since Sadie has been such an outstanding mom ~ and has taken her time letting go of that role, it has delayed the process of getting her spayed which will need to be done before she can move on to her fur-ever home (scheduled for 5/8). We are accepting applications and holding meet in greets with Sadie at our weekly adoption events. If you think Sadie could be the perfect addition to your home visit our web site at www.endingthesadness.org for an application.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
