om thinks I’m a hound mixed with a Rottweiler because of my colors and markings mixed with my adorable droopy ears and kind eyes. I originally came from a humane society in Arkansas and got to become a Minnesota boy when their facility became too full for me, but my days were limited at the humane society I ended up at, so I was beyond excited when my foster mom came and broke me out when she did! Now I still sleep the day away in my kennel at my foster home when my parents are at work. I think I would do just fine lounging the day away on the couch with a bone and some toys to chew on if I went to a home that wanted me to free roam the house all day! When I am told to go in my kennel I listen well and walk right in, especially if I have a blanket and bone in there to relax with. When I am in my kennel I do not make a sound other than an initial small whimper or howl when I first get put in the kennel, otherwise I may whine a bit when you get home from work and I know it is time to come out and play! My foster family really appreciates my kennel manners and the fact that I am typically pretty quiet and calm in there! I also do pretty well with loud noises around the house like the resident pups dropping their bones on the floor above the bedroom my kennel is in or my foster dad walking around in his big work boots. I am incredibly sweet, loving, and gentle with my people even when it is playtime. I take treats nicely and although I may stick your hand pretty far in my mouth to grab them, I take them slowly and am careful not to leave a scratch… I just want to make sure I don’t miss out on a single crumb of the yummy treats I get! I really enjoy “real” bones versus Nyla bones, but I appreciate anything I’m treated with. I absolutely love playing catch and tug of war with a rope toy and unfortunately my foster parents don’t have a fenced in yard yet, so for now we go on walks, bike rides, and play ball up and down the stairs. I LOVE to run around and get my energy out through playing catch and making zoomies in the house, although I would prefer to be able to do it outside in a good sized yard! My foster mom learned that I require a fenced in yard for these types of activities because I recently had a great time on a joy run in our neighborhood! I thought this was absolutely fantastic and was having a blast, but for some reason my foster mom wasn’t too happy with me about this… maybe she just doesn’t appreciate running like I do. My foster mom says that I would do better with a female dog in the house because I have a tough time getting along with my foster brother. I will need slow introductions to other dogs in general before we are able to play. I hope you have a fenced in yard I can get all my energy out in and/or you could take me on long walks or runs with you! I make a wonderful companion for these activities and am actually pretty awesome on a leash if I do say so myself! I also absolutely love to cuddle and be a couch potato whenever possible and I truly enjoy butt scratches and belly rubs too, so feel free to throw some of those in! I will definitely be your shadow when you’re cooking dinner, doing laundry, watching TV, or any other activity that you may be doing because I just love my people so much that I want to be with them whenever I can. I do usually lay nice nearby my people, though, and keep a watchful eye on them (what if they drop food or need my assistance with something?!), but sometimes I do like to climb into their laps and assist with things like tying shoes. I listen incredibly well though, so if you tell me to get down, sit, or stay I typically follow your instructions to a T, although I would love to keep learning as much as I can! I’m an all-around super happy, fun-loving, playful, cuddly pup that would be so happy to find my forever home with a family of my own. I do need a family that can show me they are in charge as I may push the limits a bit, but as soon as I know who is in charge I follow all the rules. I also would love to go to a family that has older kids who can play with me, but not tug at me constantly like younger kids typically do. If you think that you could give me the best forever home, unconditional cuddles and love, and space to run, whether it is in a fenced in yard, on runs, or bike rides, I’m your guy!! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
