ated phone system to answer your questions 978-422-8585 as staff is extremely limited and we don't always have time to answer the phones OR Email us at: staff@sterlingshelter.org All of our adoptable animals’ behavioral and medical health has been carefully screened by our experienced Veterinary clinic/staff as well as our employees and with input from our volunteers who all work daily hands on with our animals. Our investment in our animals includes learning as much about their personalities so that we can help you find the perfect match for your home and lifestyle. Please check our website for updates- our pet profiles are updated multiple times daily. If the pet is NO LONGER on our site he/she has been adopted. Make sure you click on each pets' photo to confirm when they are available or to see if our shelter is running any ADOPTION SPECIALS OR DISCOUNTS . Our shelter periodically runs adoption specials to promote adoptions during certain times of the year or as a way to promote national shelter adoption events! Please note: We DO NOT hold, take deposits or reserve animals for ANY reason and do NOT allow gift or surprise adoptions – Our shelter is happy to have an open adoption philosophy - where we work with our potential adopters to make the adoption process pleasant & successful. We do not have invasive adoption requirements - such as home inspections, reference & background checks, take deposits, or promise to contact you AFTER you've met & bonded with a pet (our pets are ready to go home same day as long as their medical care is complete) as many shelters/rescues do. We believe our adopters have the best intentions when adopting a pet from our shelter. So, if you feel you will be a good home to an animal & that the animal will be valued by you & your family, then we want you to adopt from us! WE DO RESPECTFULLY REQUIRE potential adopters: · To have your entire family present when adopting - especially any / all children in the home. · If you have another dog/s you bring them as well - We have several areas for meet/greet introductions. · Adopters be 21+ years of age & provide proof of home ownership or a rental agreement stating pets are allowed. PLEASE UNDERSTAND & THIS IS FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR FAMILY, YOUR CHILDREN, YOUR PET/S & OUR PETS Please note - our staff have been through countless training & behavior courses as well as temperament testing classes. We may pick up on behaviors upon introduction that indicate a specific pet/s in our shelter may not be a good fit for your family &/or resident dog/s. It is NOT uncommon to have potential adopters visit the shelter on more than one occasion before finding the perfect match. We DO generally receive puppies/dogs on a weekly basis...so if you don't find a match your 1st visit - don't be discouraged - we're sure you'll find that ideal match another time! So PLEASE RESPECT our staff & the difficult job we have - to help YOUR FAMILY make the best match possible & do what is in the BEST interest of OUR shelters' animals & your family/pets as well including following our shelters protocols set forth by our Board of Directors. WE SINCERELY FEEL - There is nothing more disappointing to YOUR FAMILY, to OUR STAFF & VOLUNTEERS & to the ANIMALS if an adoption does NOT work out & the pet is returned. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
