t adoptable dogs this Saturday (DEC 30) from 12-2 pm at the Rockville PetSmart (5154 Nicholson Ln, Kensington, MD 20895)!!!!!! LENA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Lena Best Guess for Breed: Lab/Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 11 months as of 10/27/17 SEX: female Approximate Weight: 52 lbs. Has Lived With: other dogs Currently Living at: DC area boarding facility Meet Lena! This beautiful and sweet girl is an 11 month old Shepherd/Lab mix, weighing in at approximately 52 pounds. Lena found herself at the shelter through no fault of her own and is looking for a forever family to give her the love and attention she deserves! Could it be yours? Lena is a lively and playful dog, so she’ll require an active family that can keep up with her and will provide her with PLENTY of exercise and playtime (she is a young shepherd/lab after all!). She will need both mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis to keep her happy and healthy. An adopter who works full time would need to commit to having a midday dog walker or day care for her during the week. She would love to go on long walks, hikes, and take trips to the dog park so she can socialize with her canine friends. And of course, upon returning home, she'd love to shower her new forever family with tons of kisses and cuddles! Lena gets along great with other dogs so she'd be a great addition to an existing pack – or she'd be happy to soak up all the attention as an only dog! We haven't had a chance to see her interact with cats or kids yet. If you have them, let us know, and we'll do our best to find out! Lena is also looking forward to attending obedience school to hone in her doggie manners and impress her new family. Lena will make a GREAT companion and family member; you won’t regret opening your heart and home to this sweet girl! Like most shelter dogs, Lena may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Lauren at laurenm@luckydoganimalrescue.org! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
