! NIGEL NEEDS A FOSTER OR A FOREVER HOME! Name: Nigel Best guess as to breed: Lab mix Best guess as to age: 5 months as of 8/15/17 Approximately Weight: 40 lbs as of 8/15/17 Has lived with: dogs Currently Living at: A scary southern shelter in South Carolina. Nigel can't wait to go to DC to meet his forever family. Special adoption considerations: n/a Hello. My name is Nigel and I'm a 5 month old, 40 pound, male, lab mix puppy. I'm looking for my very own forever home. I really don't like it in the shelter, it's loud and cold and scary. I'm really excited to come to DC and hopefully find someone to love me, but I'm kind of nervous, too. Everything is so big and new and different! I'm looking for someone to cuddle us close and tell me everything will be okay. Are you that person? I've heard a little about forever homes from some of the bigger dogs in the shelter. They sound like a dream come true! I've heard you sometimes get your very own little bed and some toys to share and even some yummy treats. But I'm most looking forward to the cuddles and kisses and love. I just can't wait for a family or person of my own to love with my whole puppy heart! I've still got some growing to do, so I'll need some help learning the ropes. I can do it though, I'm really smart and I just want to make you happy and proud of me. I think puppy kindergarten at an obedience school sounds really great. I like nice long walks and trips to the dog park, too, if it's not too much to ask. Do you think you can help me navigate this great big new world? Like most puppies, Nigel will need to work on his housetraining. Nigel will also need to go to obedience school so he can grow into a well-socialized dog! We are not sure how Nigel is with kids, let us know and we will try to find out for you. Nigel does not get along with cats. The adoption fee for this dog is $400, which includes the cost of transport from the shelter and routine vetting. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Donna at donnao@luckydoganimalrescue.org. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
