! ORION NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Orion Best Guess for Breed: Labrador Retriever mix Best Guess for Age: 10 months as of 8/8/17 SEX: male Approximate Weight: 50 pounds Has Lived With: other dogs Currently Living at: Shelter. Orion needs a foster--or better yet, forever!--home. Special Considerations: Caution on cats. Orion seems a bit nervous and unsure around them. Well, hey there! I'm Orion, and I'm a 10-month-old, 50-pound Black Labrador mix! And I just found out I get to travel up to the DC area really soon to meet my new forever family! Isn't that great news? I think it's great news! While I'm way past that baby dog stage, there's still a lot of puppy in me. I'm going to need a family that can be patient with me while I finish growing up, and who can take me out for a LOT of exercise! I'm going to need to be able to run around during frequent trips to the dog park or new neighborhood dog friends, go on long walks, and I'm at the perfect age to start learning my basic commands and manners. On the other hand, once you get me all tired out? There's nothing that sounds better than snoozing on your couch, your bed, your kitchen floor... and I guess I can take a little siesta in my own cozy dog bed sometimes, too! Cats make me a little nervous and unsure, so if you have them, I may not be the best fit for your family. I'm not sure how I'll do with kids yet, but we can certainly figure that out when I roll on into town! Also, my shelter wants you to know I am NOT a fan of being on leash, so I'm definitely going to need to work on that as well as all my appropriate behaviors and training so I can show you what a very good boy I can be. According to the trainer who helped evaluate me at my shelter (and who was very impressed with me), I am "crazy food motivated, and super smart. [I am] going to be super easy to teach." So, are you thinking what I'm thinking? Please fill out and submit an application for me today! Like most shelter dogs, Orion may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
