r the Perfect Home! Sherlock has a pending adoption!! We are no longer accepting applications for him. He hopes you consider one of our other wonderful Lucky Puppies!! Name: SHERLOCK Breed: BLACK LAB MIX Approximate Age: 9 WEEKS SEX: MALE Approximate Weight: 9 LBS. Has Lived With: Other Dogs Currently Living at: SC Shelter - SHERLOCK needs a foster or better yet a forever home! Special adoption considerations: Young puppy, frequent potty breaks and socialization needed, commitment to neuter by 6 months, additional vaccinations needed. Hello humans! My name is Sherlock and I am searching all the clues to hunt for my perfect forever family!!! What is Sherlock without his Watson -- could you be my special sidekick for life?? I am ready to come to DC and will be following my nose to find my furever home! I love to play and have lots of puppy wrestle sessions! I want to be home for the holidays and be able to go rompin' around my very own yard jumpin' in piles of colorful leaves. My dream would be long walks, doggy parks, peanut butter kongs and a warm bed to call all mine - I promise I'll be a good boy so Santa Paws comes and visits me! The shelter says I am a typical lab puppy -- bubbly, bouncy and love my naps and cuddles! Since I am soo young, I will be a big responsibility and take a lot of time, lookin' after and training. I am a blank slate ready to be trained and molded into your perfect pup! I will probably be good with kids and cats since I am just a puppy but I have never lived with them officially so if you have a feline friend my lucky dog friends can test me out! I'm just a little guy so I'll need lots of looking after. I'm sorry to say that if you work 9-5 away from home you aren't a good fit for me unless you can show documentation of a multiple times a day dog walker. So what in the name of milkbones are you waiting for....fill out the application and send it to my adoption coordinator! I am trying to wait patiently...wiggle...wiggle...wiggle! Sherlock is not old enough to have had all of his vaccines. It will be your responsibility, as the adopter, to ensure that the remaining puppy vaccines are given at the appropriate time. Please also keep in mind that, until your puppy is fully vaccinated, he is at greater risk for illness than an adult dog. Due to his young age, Sherlock has not yet been neutered. As part of the adoption contract, it will be your responsibility, as the adopter, to ensure that this is done no later than 3/1/17 - NO EXCEPTIONS! Due to a puppy's need for attention and frequent bathroom excursions, we do not adopt dogs under 5 months of age to homes where no one is home during the day. This means no 9-5ers, unless you commit to hiring a dog walker to come multiple times a day. Like all puppies, Sherlock will need to work on his housetraining. He will also need to go to obedience school so he can grow into a well-socialized dog! The adoption fee for this dog is $400, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Ali at Alip@luckydoganimalrescue.org! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
