having your complete focus. Dobie is super smart and very quickly figures out tricks he can do to keep your attention on him. He is super sweet, a little silly and his best world is a having his own devoted human and perhaps a female canine companion, who he can herd around and run with. Dobie's intelligence is off the charts and he would be excellent at sign language and agility. He is a complete sponge for loves and pets. He cannot get enough human touch and communicates his wishes by staring with his very expressionistic eyes into yours to solicit loves and soft words. When Dobie wants attention, he has a signature move he does where he gets a little ahead of you to block you and jumps up putting his front feet on a piece of fencing or furniture or a wall and looks over his shoulder to ask for body rubs. He also does this when he is stalling for time in the event you are asking him to do something he does not want to do. These techniques are Dobie originals lol and uses his feet a lot to communicate as well. If he gets bored in the dog run, he is excellent flipping his dog bowls over and pushing them around like a soccer ball. Dobie LOVES food and TREATS!!! and he will work for them. He has a great nose and his hearing his amazing. If you throw a few biscuits out in the field - he can quickly find them or he will continue to run a circle pattern until he does. He is great with basic training and kennels when there is poor weather. He has been an outside dog mostly but is good in the house and will settle down after a few minutes. He would transfer as a total inside dog with very little training and he would be great with a dog door. Dobie has a good bark and is good about letting you know when there is stranger danger at the fence line. He likes to race the neighbor dog up and down the fence when the opportunity arises - which is about everyday! He is used to exercising so his new home will have to include walking and running. Dobie loves the female dogs and has had two best friends – a Pittie and Rottie that he has LOVED to play and horse around. Having a female companion has kept him happy and calm. If there is no companion dog in his new home, it would be great if an occasional play date could be arranged with another female - as he is used to having friends around. He is picky with the male dogs. He could be paired with a non dominate male - perhaps younger - so he can be the big boss dog. He is tolerant of my senior male dog and just kind of ignores him. It would take some training if you were considering a dog park. He has only been a rural dog so city noises would need to be worked on for him. Dobie's best home would be a home where he is the focus. Perhaps a retired single or couple - someone retired, who has had bigger dogs in the past who enjoys a small project. Dobie has not spent time around children so it would be a stretch for him to adjust to that kind of energy immediately. If you have children coming to visit, he would be very content to be outside or in a dog run. Dobie would be a great long distance walking dog, a running companion, he would love to hike and possibly camp once he got the hang of things. Dobie is very sensitive so your patience and training will determine how far he can go. In the right hands and with confidence boosting outdoor experiences - he will do very well. Around the ranch, he is a very happy, very loving and likes to supervise work projects. lol He is a very routine dog and really enjoys the water when its warm - especially the walmart children's plastic pools. Dobie is 4-5 years old, current on his vetting and microchipped. For more information about this beautiful boy, please contact Pam at buddyranch@hotmail.com

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
