House Trained: In progress Crate Trained: Yes Energy level: Moderate History: Breeder release from Missouri Adoption Fee: $350 From the Foster: Hi, my name is Prince. Before I came to secondhand hounds, I was in one of those puppy mills that everyone talks about not being the best of conditions, and either was I. Luckily, I was released so I could have the chance to learn how to play, enjoy being outside, and have a family of my own. When I first arrived I was very shy, afraid of being picked up or even looking at people. Where I came from, I never really received any love or attention, so I wasn’t sure how to react to it. It also didn’t help that I had an entire mouth of really bad teeth that were extremely painful. Unfortunately, they did have to pull all of them, but now I get to eat soft food the rest of my life and I feel so much better. Even though I don’t have any teeth to bite with, I have never even snapped or growled at anyone. They also found I have a heart murmur, but it was checked and I now have to take some medicine every day, but my foster mom mixes it with my food or for a special treat braunschweiger. I have discovered braunschweiger is the best thing on earth and will dance with excitement and run around the kitchen when I know I get to have some. The doctor says I will have to have the murmur checked about every 6 months but for now, I am good and my foster mom can give you some more information about that. So what is the best match for me? I would do best in a lower activity environment and would like someone that has patience to go slower and allow me to feel safe. When I am scared I show you by either running away or trying to blend into the floor. I’m not a dog that needs other dogs, but I am fine with them and I really just ignore the cat. Am fine with older kids that understand I am scared, but I think little ones grabbing me would be hard for me. I hang in the bedroom much of the time, but I like to sit on your lap when you watch TV. Every day I am coming out more and feeling comfortable exploring. I have recently discovered toys and love small soft rubber squeaky balls and stuffed animals. I love to play short games of chase around the kitchen with my foster mom and love to explore the fenced in yard on nice weather days. I have short little legs so shorter walks are great, but I’m not a runner or a hiker. I am about 80% potty trained, but I don’t understand how to go to the door to tell you I need to go out yet. I am a little quirky and have a language all my own. If I have to go out, I lay down so you can pick me up. If I want you to pick me up and hold me, I will lay down in front of you to make it easy. If I am hungry, I will come in the kitchen and stare at you and run around the kitchen until you feed me. I may also make a little grunting noise to try to tell you to hurry it along. I do not bark really at all, so I would be if you have neighbors close by. My foster mom tells everyone I am the sweetest little guy she have ever met.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
