find out if I’m available to meet during the week. After living in a loving home for 11 years, I’ve lost my home twice in the last 6 months. First because of a divorce and second because they reported that I wasn’t potty trained and that I was deaf. However, in my foster home, we’ve found that I can still hear a little bit. I come when I'm called at supper time and I respond to my people clapping and calling my name when I'm outside. I may have some “selective hearing” too he he. The other nice dogs are helping me with my potty training, as I watch them and do what they do. My foster family has figured out my potty “signal” too. And when I start pacing, it’s time to go out! Another nice dog or two that I could follow the lead of in my new home would be helpful, so let’s meet! I’m not going to play with another dog, but I do seem to find comfort in their company and leadership. I’m currently living with 4 dogs, from small to large and 2 kitties and I get along with all the pets in my foster home, so let’s meet if you have pets. I’m a precious, tiny and independent doggie. My foster family says that I march to my own little drum and have nicknamed me “bee bop” because of my cute prancing/hopping walk. Please give me a week or even more to settle into your home, as I’ve experienced a lot of change in my life lately. When I was first rescued, I didn’t know how to go up or down stairs, but I’m learning to do them now, by following my people when they show me my food bowl. I’m also very small and you can easily carry me up or down. Speaking of food, I do like to have food available a lot and I need to gain just a little bit of weight (1-2 pounds), so when my family is at work, they place food, water and a potty pad in my crate as well as my nice bed and I’m a happy camper all day. Since I like my crate so much and rest in it throughout the day and sleep there peacefully at night, I’ll require one in my new home as it’s somewhere I go for comfort. I’ve also been keeping it clean during the day with a potty pad inside, just in case. I had some recent hair loss which the vet thinks may have been a result of an infection that I've been treated for. It made my foster mom think that I looked a bit like a Chinese Crested, though I have lots more hair than they do. I don’t think I’d like a home with kids that would want to play with or handle me, and I haven’t lived with kids in the past, so much older mature kids would be best. I’m not a lap dog, but I am a very sweet dog who likes to be near my people and will be a nice companion for the right family. Please be willing to work with me on my potty manners and know that I’m not completely potty trained but am improving. Energy level: 3-4. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, neutered and my adoption fee is $275.00.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
