r’ homes for all the pets in our care. This includes getting the medical care and treatment for many pets who are sick or injured. Our “Special Needs And Senior ” Pets suffer from an array of acute or chronic health conditions. The Guardian Angel Fund for our “Special Needs And Senior” pets is supported by donations from the community. Please consider making a donation and help save a life today! Anything you are able to give will go far in improving the lives of the dogs in our area. Dogs with special needs often require additional medicine or rehabilitation time. Your gift to our Guardian Angel Fund will help these special pets regain their health so they can have the quality of life that they deserve and/or then be adopted into their ‘forever’ homes! Hi I'm Ryder, I am a senior Maltese around 10 lbs and 12 years young! I was a stray that was rescued from a rural kill shelter by a good samaritan and now am loving life with my foster mom who gives me plenty of food and treats! Yum! I get along great with other dogs and also cats. I love people too! I'm a pretty easy going guy, I like to nap a lot and when I'm awake I like to wander in the backyard, wag my tail and give lots of kisses. I am not fully housebroken but I am working on that. I don't have the greatest hearing and my balance is a little off sometimes, I also have a grade 4 heart murmur along with some lumps and growths here and there but I don't let that get me down, life's too short to dwell on the negative when you can still wag your tail! So basically, I'm looking for a forever home that will give me a warm bed to snuggle in and plenty of love and cuddles for whatever time I have left. If that is you - let me know! Please complete an application at www.safeanimalhaven.org. Thank you! WE FINALIZE EVERY ADOPTION WITH A HOME VISIT THEREFORE POTENTIAL HOMES MUST BE WITHIN A HOURS DRIVE TIME OF CHARLOTTE NC. A FOSTER PET WILL NOT BE SHIPPED TO SOMEONE LIVING OUTSIDE THE ADOPTION AREA NOR WILL ANYONE BE ALLOWED TO COME PICK A PET UP FROM US. YOU MUST BE 21 TO ADOPT FROM OUR GROUP Sincerely, S.A.F.E. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
