I am new rescue and am about 5 years old and 6 pounds. I am looking for such a special home and cannot wait to tell you all about myself! During my first few weeks in my foster home, I have been easily startled and frightened. You see, my life before this was pretty scary. I am not used to feeling safe and loved, so this is all very new for me. My foster family is pretty great and helping me with my confidence. I would love a family who can continue these lessons at a pace I'm comfortable with. I am VERY food motivated, so that is very helpful! I even follow my foster mom when she walks towards the kitchen. Overall, I am mellow, yet really appreciate when I know someone or something is approaching me. When people take their time in approaching me or picking me up, I do best. I may be nervous about being picked up or set down, but I do relax when I'm held firmly. This helps me understand I won't be dropped and am safe. I actually like to tuck my head under your chin and snuggle into your neck until you get tired of it. I am well on my way to being the best snuggle bug in town. I think one of the other reasons I some times get startled easily is because I likely am hearing impaired. Like I said, the more warning I have that someone wants to pick me up or is walking along, the better. This also has made me the world's best guard dog. I bark at things that surprise me and want everyone in the house to know that I have perfected the security alarm. No need for a fancy house system, you've got security officer Froggie on duty! We are working on all sorts of dog skills. I have perfected the leash and prance around the neighborhood like the super hero I am. We've been working on specific hand gestures for commands and I'm doing great. I'm working on my house training and hopefully will master that soon. I don't have teeth, but that doesn't stop me from eating dry food or gnawing on chewies. No dental cleanings for this guy! I like to carry around small stuffed toys and collect them to put in my bed. I sometimes even am sneaky and steal the toys and chewies from other dogs. I'll tell you my secret plan. I wait for my fur friends to get a drink of water and silently sneak by to steal the chewie or toy. Then I leave undetected and add it to my own stash! Maybe I can sneak away some treats for you! I know the perfect home is out there for me. Until I find it, I will keep working hard to become the dog I am meant to be! Many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends. In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog, and do not currently have a dog residing with you, please understand that your home might not be the right fit for many of our dogs. ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there*** ADOPTION EVENTS: Adoption events are updated as the foster home RSVP's to attend. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. You may wish to consider applying and setting up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/ Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN. All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets. All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet. All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal. YOU CAN HELP: Not able to foster or adopt right now? Please consider sponsoring an Underdog. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
