kle joins us from San Jose Animal Care Center and San Jose Animal Advocates and was treated there by Tails of a Shelter Vet Periwinkle is a 14 yr old, 16 lb Bichon Frise Mix (Maltese? Poodle?). He was previously neutered and has been microchipped and vaccinated. He has also had senior labwork. He had to go immediately to the groomer for a shave down when he got here (like they literally fit us in on an emergency basis) as his coat had been neglected for months or longer and was pulling on his skin and causing him pain. He was dumped at the shelter because of a "divorce" and we think that is the most shameful and ridiculous thing ever. HE wasn't the cause of a marriage breaking up but he was the victim. He was purchased as a pup 14 years ago and then dumped because neither adult wanted to take responsibility for him. For shame. It wasn't just Periwinkle's coat that had been neglected for so long... his mouth is HORRIFIC and he will be getting a dental cleaning (with extractions) on Friday 7/21/17. While he is under, he will be getting his two "cherry eyes" repaired. (Cherry eye is a cosmetic issue with Periwinkle as it is most of the time, but since he will be under anesthesia for the dental, we will have it taken care of as well). Periwinkle is a NICE dog who loves to go on walks. He gets along well with other dogs, seems to ignore cats and would be fine with children. He appears to be housebroken and crate trained and he is EXCELLENT on the leash. Like all non-shedding dogs, he will require regular trips to the groomer every 6-8 weeks to ensure that he stays mat-free (and pain free). Periwinkle is ADOPTABLE and is awaiting his retirement home. He is located in the SF Bay Area of CA and we will entertain REASONABLE adoption inquiries out of the area. However, do not ask us to ship him to you like he is an Amazon package. To inquire about adoption, please email us at beourpet@gmail.com To contribute towards Periwinkle's medical expenses while in our care, please do so online at www.paypal.me/UOH. GENERAL INFO: Housebroken?: Yes, seems to be Crate Trained?: Yes Leash Trained?: Yes Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: Yes Good with cats?: Yes, we think so Good with dogs?: Yes Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: yes Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of any age Umbrella of Hope is a non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals off death row from local shelters. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
