feed me. Thank goodness ICARE came to my rescue when my owners learned that someone wanted me! I now am living the good life and getting the care that I deserve! I am an 8 year old malti-poo who was recently diagnosed with epilepsy however we have it under control with my phenobarbital prescription. I am over weight but working on getting back to a healthy weight again by eating a diet made by Just Food For Dogs and working up my stamina to walk longer distances. So far I have lost 4lbs! My foster family has never heard me bark before I am a super quiet dog who just likes to lounge around. I get along with all dogs but I am not a dog who likes to play with others I would much rather sit around and do nothing. So if you are looking for a companion for your current dog I am probably not the one. I have my favorites spots around the house that I like to lounge if you are ever looking for me. I am a slow guy so taking slow walks around the park is about all that I can do at this time but sometimes I have a bit of a pep to my step. My foster family puts me in a stroller halfway through my walk so that I can keep up with the pack who walks 2 miles daily. I don't have a mean bone in my body and can careless if there are cats or other dogs around. I do have cataracts in one of my eyes which makes it a little difficult to judge depth perception and see properly but I get around just fine. I just am not a fan of the staircase and I do expect my family to carry me up when it is time to go upstairs. Once I am settled for the night I don't move until my humans get up. I am completely potty trained and have not ever had any accidents. I also recently got my teeth cleaned so my breathe is nice and clean! I didn't even have to lose any teeth the vet said they look great! So if you are looking for a chill dude feel free to contact my friends at ICARE. In the meantime I will just be hanging out waiting for that special family to find me. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
