American Bulldog / Mastiff (short coat) Medium Adult Male 4 years old (estimated) 80 lbs. Neutered & up to date on all his shots Background: Marshmallow was found outside my dance studio, hiding from the intense FL sun, under a shady tree. I recognized him as a dog that was abandoned in a nearby auto shop lot, they moved out and left him locked inside the gate to starve. He got out, and was found a few blocks away. He was very scared and hesitant of people and absolutely filthy, he appeared to be a grey dog, I knew he was actually a white dog. He’s since been given several baths, and is now back to his real color. We got him scanned for a microchip (he doesn’t have one) and posted him on all the local boards for lost/missing pets to no luck. We are now fostering him at the bakery until he finds his forever home. Temperament: He’s a super sweet, affectionate, happy dog. When I rescued him, he was so scared and unsure, then after 2 days of love, food, water, toys and a safe, indoor place to live, he completely came out of his shell. He is so sweet, loves to give kisses now, his tag wags so much as soon as he sees you, he’s really a completely different dog. He has probably spent his whole life outdoors, in a lot or on the street, so he doesn’t know many commands, though he is very gentle on a leash. He is somewhat house broken and is crate trained. He is a gentle giant that absolutely loves attention. He just wants to be pet, give kisses and be around people now. He’s very low key, he’s a mellow dog, he’ll just chill all day. He has been around other dogs, and he seems like he would be fine with another dog with the proper introduction (I don’t know about cats, as we don’t have any to test with) Here is a video of Marshmallow enjoying some love after his first ever bath, probably of his life. youtu.be/aWVxeNIF5wM Health: We have taken him to be neutered and he is up to date on all his shots. We have paid for all those costs out of pocket to get him taken care of. He has some sores and calluses on his legs, from a life on concrete, but hair is growing back in now on a few of them. He has some skin irritation, which will be looked at this week. He has the scars and marks of a dog that’s had to fend for himself for his whole life, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming the sweetest Marshmallow we’ve ever met.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
