Big Bear but my Foster Parents call me Sandy for short. I am not sure how Sandy is short for Big Bear, but there isn’t anything short about me, I am a Bull Mastiff blend, so I am very tall. Favorite Quote: Life is like a 93 pound bag of chocolates, you actually know what you are going to get. Lemme explain. I am a 7-8 year old fully grown up chocolate and caramel brindle striped dog. I am a grown up, so you will know exactly what you are getting, no crossing your fingers and your toes hoping that brand new puppy doesn’t grow up to be a jerkwad. Temperament: Friendly with people of all ages, sizes, and gender. I have done well with cats too. I can be bossy to other dogs, so your dog will not have to mind that. I want to reiterate that I am gentle with kids, even the toddley kind. I like to be pet, and will let you touch my paws, ears, belly and booty. If you want, I will even crawl into your lap and snuggle in your pets (on the floor, I don’t like to get on the furniture). Exercise Sesh Level: Extra fries? Of course! Exer-cise NOT extra fries: Ah….I see the diffurence there. I am easy on the short walks because of my arthritis. Doing the stairs is kinda hard too due to my arthritis. I prefer to sprawl out on the floor (not on the furniture again that dern arthritis). Behaviors: I am house trained, crate trained (need treats for encouragement), walk well on leash, and come when called. I do not jump, I suppose the arthritis has a lot to do with that. I am working on playing nicely with other dogs, and have grown to tolerate the resident dog. I know sit, shake, and lay down. Theme Song: Lean on Me! Or really…. Lean on You. I am a leaner, meaning I LoVE to be next to you, sit by your side, and put my muzzle in your lap. I am hoping to find a retirement home where I will have someone to lean on for the rest of my life. Do you have a nice warm place, near you, that I could lean and love on you? If so, please email AdoptionsGodsdogsrescue and tell them you want ME!! I'm ready .... GOD'S DOGS Rescue, in San Antonio TX, does not have a shelter - ALL of our dogs are raised in foster homes in the San Antonio area. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
