on taking in another foster. This is how it always goes. We saw a video of Shayla, mountain cur, in the shelter, terrified. A precious little girl, not knowing why she got dropped off, where she was or who these people were. Typically, these kinds of dogs (scared) don’t do well in shelters. To give her a fighting chance we took her in. The first week, she mostly hid in the back bedroom and would peek out every so often to see what new noise she had just heard. Even now, she still likes her own bed (probably because she didn’t have one) but is much more social now. Shayla, most likely, will not make a first good impression as she is still wary of new things and people. But we have been working with her and allow her to meet anyone new so it’s not quite so scary anymore. She does know some commands, is potty trained and we are working on staying “down” as she gets extremely excited when you come home. And just for fun, she’s learning to dance. Shayla does live with 6 other dogs and 4 cats. While she sort-of tries to nibble on the cats, she is not aggressive and they are all still alive. (She has been with us 4 months.) Update: Shayla has adjusted to foster care and seriously does great with the dogs and cats (and even foster puppy) in the home. She enjoys her inside cuddle time and understands her routine. She would love to have a routine in a forever home though. This girl is just gentle and sweet as can be. IS she your next forever friend? She thinks so! Shayla came into our care in Aug. 2017. She was timid in the shelter but is already doing SO much better in her foster home. She loves other dogs, ignores cats, and appreciates a good belly rub. She is quiet in the crate and her house training is coming along great. She is very gentle. This dogs adoption fee is $175 which covers the following: spay/neuter, microchip, heartworm testing, dhp/p, rabies, bordatella (agre appropriate vaccines), deworming, and all the care he received while with CVRR. All animals are on flea and tick and parasite prevention for the duration in fostercare. We are an volunteer group, who process the applications so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions. You can expedite the process by providing accurate phone and email addresses for all your references. Time to make phone calls is limited and we often have multiple applications in process . We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible. When your application is approved, we will schedule a meet-and-greet to see if the dog picks you too. If it seems that the adoption will be a good match for all, there is an adoption fee and an adoption contract to be signed. The adoption fees help cover a portion of the care provided to the animals. All dogs and cats are microchipped and all animals adopted out are spayed/neutered and fully vetted. **All of our animals have a lifetime commitment. If for any reason, the adoption does not work out, the cats and dogs are to come back to CVRR, which is a NO kill rescue.*** The foster family and the rescue volunteers will choose the new home based on the best fit for the dog/cat. Our first step is an application which can be filled out atwww.cvrrescue.org

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
