. Visit our FAQ webpage for commonly asked questions about our adoption/foster process. Dova is a Mountain Cur and Feist mix. He’s a bit bigger than a Feist, and has the fine brindle coat of a Mountain Cur. He’s 2 years, 2 months old, and weighed 38 lbs at his vet check up. He is a bit on the thin side and will be around 45 lbs. when properly fed. Dova has gotten along well with his foster sister. They play well together, and at this point are still learning to trust each other. Dova has a friendly, outgoing soul. He has given a friendly greeting to all the people he’s met. On that he’s getting some instruction on manners; he does jump up to give a warmer greeting. He does pretty well on a leash, and on this his manners are improving quickly. We are introducing him to a crate, and so far this is going well. His favorite place is curled up with his people on the couch. In the short time we’ve had Dova, he showed us he knows basic commands. He will sit and come. We have not tested the ‘come’ unleashed with a solid distraction like a squirrel yet. He’s housebroken. We don’t know about cats; there are none for us to introduce him to in our house, though his intake description suggests he may not be good with cats. Dova loves to follow his people around, and is always ready to present his expressive ears for a scratching. Applicants willing to enroll their dog in obedience classes will be given preference. Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all dogs/cats before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the dog's/cat’s shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the dog/cat is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Dogs and cats MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our dogs and cats back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted dog or cat. The petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs and cats. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. Thank you for looking through our list of animals needing forever homes. We appreciate you stopping by.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
