kind of friend that everyone needs in their life. He is a big flirt who just adores people, and he's pretty sure they adore him back. He's between 2 and 3 years old, although he sure acts like a goofy puppy during playtime. He is full size at only 30 lbs. Elvis absolutely LOVES to play. Every toy he sees becomes his new favorite thing. He will even play with a new cardboard box for hours. He adores the outdoors and daily exercise can help him be a calm, happy dog in your home. He also really enjoys training sessions. He learns new tricks and commands quickly, as long as you keep the yummy treats coming! He gets along well with other dogs that he knows, but new dogs sometimes scare him so he may bark and act tough until he knows whether they are friendly. He is doing great with kennel training and house training. He does struggle some with separation anxiety and will need to be crated or kept in a restricted area if he has to be left alone. He can be a bit of an escape artist so any fenced yard that he uses without supervision would need to be quite secure and more than 4' tall. He's led an interesting life and would love to tell you all about it over a big bag of dog treats and toys. We met Elvis because he was sharing a kennel with Prince, another MPRAVL dog we rescued, and we just couldn't say no to his smile. Once you meet this happy boy, we are willing to bet you won't be able to say no either! Contact us today to learn more about Elvis! All Mountain Pet Rescue (Asheville) animals are up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and micro-chipped before adoption. Contact the foster parent or Mountain Pet Rescue at pets @mountainpetrescueavl.org for more information. Please note that visual breed identification of companion animals has been proven to be unreliable, so for most of our animals we provide a best guess at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our animals as an individual and do our best to describe and place pets based on personality not breed label. Mountain Pet Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax deductible charity (EIN 82-3039637) located in Asheville, NC.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
