Dog's Name: Toby Estimated Breed : Terrier Mix Approximate Age: 3 years Approximate Weight: approx. 35 lbs Currently Living at: Boarding Adoption Fee: $300 DOG'S DESCRIPTION Toby is a bundle of fun! He is an outgoing fella once he gets to know you. He can be a little timid with new people but it doesn't take him long to warm up! Once he knows you, he loves you and wants to be with you as much as possible, he's a great snuggler. Toby was in a foster home with another dog who was low energy, so it wasn't the best fit. He is new at this whole living with another dog thing so he is still learning his boundaries and to give her some personal space. He doesn't quite understand that it is not playtime as soon as she gets up. But he can be redirected pretty easily. When we dropped him off with his foster he was so excited to be in the yard! He ran and ran with a big smile on his face. He maybe 3yrs old but still has a lot of puppy in him, would be a great jogging companion. Toby will need some leash training as he does pull a bit. His foster says he is full of love and joie de vivre (love of life)! Toby does better with older children. Your new pet will require a refresher in house-training. K-9 Lifesavers strongly recommends all new adopters enroll their new pet into obedience training. This provides for an easier transition into a new home, ensures the dog remains well socialized, and helps form a bond between the dog and the new family. Adoption fees cover basic vetting, spay/neuter surgery (for dogs over 6 months old), rabies, distemper/parvo vaccinations, treatment for worms, heartworm testing, monthly heartworm prevention and monthly flea/tick prevention (while the animal is in our care), and transport costs from high-kill shelter. Please note that on average, K-9 Lifesavers spend significantly more on each dog than their adoption fee. Adoption fee for HW positive dog also covers heartworm treatment at our partner vets. Foster Program: Foster homes provide for the temporary care of a rescue until the dog is placed into a loving, forever home. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
