Gwen Hairless Chinese Crested, Female Estimated 9 years old 6 lbs History: Gwen was part of a large cruelty case involving 242 dogs just outside of Houston. The conditions Gwen lived in most, if not all, of her life included filthy small wire cages filled with too many dogs and neglect that is typical of puppy mills. She has many behaviors typical of puppy mill dogs that we will educate her adopter(s) about further. Breed: Gwen is considered a “hairy hairless” Chinese Crested, meaning that she has more hair than a “true hairless” but is not completely covered in hair. In order to maintain the typical hairless crested look some light grooming is required but that is based on the preference of the owner. Her skin has blemishes more like those seen on human skin due to her years of neglect. Her skin requires consistent care to improve it’s condition although some pigmentation and pearly cysts will remain forever. Her skin must also be protected from the sun if there is going to be prolonged exposure either with clothing or sunscreen. She will also require clothing in the winter. Cresteds for the most part are typically shy and often described as more “cat-like” due to their independent and aloof nature. Exercise requirements are low and typically cresteds show short bursts of energy interspersed between lots of sleeping. Breed knowledge is preferred but a willingness to research and learn more about the breed is a requirement for her home. Personality: Gwen is a shy girl who is quickly showing us her personality and playful side but will need a home that is patient and understanding of her background. She will likely always have a shyness about her, especially with strangers, but she has never been aggressive. Right now she likes to play with Gavin and will jump on him to get him to join in, she even tries to get her other foster siblings to play. She has explored a couple toys, you would really never think she’s nine years old! She tends to play for about 5 minutes at a time and then sleep for hours. She likes to follow people around the house and sniff them but might shy away if a hand reaches out to pet her. She is nervous when being held but will eventually calm down and rest in your lap. I have not heard her bark. Vetting: Gwen is up to date on all shots (rabies, DA2PPv+Cv, Bordatella, canine influenza), heartworm negative and on heartworm and flea preventative, and spayed. She has been treated for a flea infestation and intestinal parasites. Before arriving at Rockers Rescue had 8 teeth removed during her dental cleaning. Part of her lower jaw is missing (likely due to a combination of poor dentition and missing teeth genetically linked to the hairless variety and without teeth the jaw lose its integrity). For this reason she likes regular food soaked in water to make it soft, mixed in with some wet food. She can eat soft treats. She also has nuclear sclerosis, a common condition in dogs over 6 affecting the lens of the eye that does not affect or vision and is not the same as cataracts. We also have videos. Home requirements: Being such a small dog, Gwen requires a home without other large dogs that could trample her. Likewise due to her size and personality, a home with teenagers and older is best. All cresteds, but especially puppy mill dogs, require a VERY securely fenced yard. She is NOT leash trained and is progressing well with potty training but we cannot guarantee that she will not have accidents. She does use a potty pad if available. About Applying to Adopt: This pet has a $150 adoption donation fee (microchip fee is included) This fee generally NEVER covers how much we actually spend on the animal. We are a 501c3 non profit so the fee goes back into our volunteer rescue to help us save more lives. We function solely on donations.
