* Drake’s foster mom describes him as perfection on 4 legs! He is a 7 year old, petite, 45#, Lab mix. Somehow, this darling boy lived in a small Louisiana shelter for 6 of his 7 years. He was surrendered as a 5 month old pup in March of 2012 and he stayed there, alone in a small run until he was rescued in November of 2017. Our hearts break for Drake’s lost years. He literally grew up and turned grey in a concrete kennel. Drake is not looking back though and he is happy and thankful to be out! Since being in foster care, his coat has changed from a dull brown to a shiny black. His eyes are full of love and he has a pep in his step (just check out his videos). Drake is completely housetrained. He walks like a dream on leash and enjoy his strolls around the neighborhood. He does not need to be crated because he simply naps on his dog bed while his foster family is away and is not destructive in any way. He knows how to sit and loves treats. He can be shy upon initially meeting someone new but quickly warms up with kind words and pets. Drake has been fostered with kids, other dogs and a cat and is great with all. He has shown no food or toy guarding/aggression in the 4 months he has been in foster care. His foster mom says, “Drake was said to have been abused as a puppy by a man, and then taken to the Humane Society where he lived for nearly 6 years. He is a little more shy of men, but has adapted well with the guys in our home (my husband and son). He is a gentle old soul who loves to snuggle, is an excellent companion, lives to be petted and scratched and aims to please. He has so much love in his big brown eyes! Although Drake has done well in our busy home, I think he would be happier with a more low key family. He likes the company of other dogs, but would be fine as an only dog with lots of attention. My favorite thing about Drake is the amount of love and forgiveness this forgotten, old guy still has to give to a world who treated him badly. You can’t help but fall in love with his marshmallow face.” Let’s find this deserving boy the loving home he should have had all along! Drake photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/7x6nXElkcAxwQsa72 Drake videos: https://youtu.be/473cK6wNdjU https://youtu.be/WxyaPftMEHY Drake is neutered, microchipped, current on vaccinations, heartworm/flea prevention and deworming. Upon rescue he did test positive for heartworm, but breezed through treatment and as of February 22, 2018 is heartworm free and can transport to a lucky adopter at any time. If you would like to apply to make Drake your own, please email us at TheChiSociety@gmail.com All of our dogs are spayed/ neutered before adoption. Adult dogs have had their core vaccines---parvo, distemper, bordatella, and rabies, All dogs are tested and are heartworm negative. In addition they have been de-wormed and kept on heartworm prevention and flea prevention while in foster care. Most dogs come with a micr-chip already implanted. Adoption fees range from 235.00- 275.00 depending on the dog. Many times the adoption fee does not even cover the cost of all of the vetting we have done for a dog. In addition, some of our dogs are fostered in the South and come up once adopted---There is an additional transport fee for these dogs. Please contact the person listed in the bio for more information on a particular dog. We are very careful in placing our dogs--and look for the best home for each dog--All of our dogs are fostered in private homes, with fosters who get to know the dogs and know the types of home that would be best for each dog. Thank you for considering a rescued pet and we look forward to helping you find a great dog match--

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
